[Dan Tran] “Is it possible to keyframe the Warp Stabilizer?”
not without a long process. see it here: https://lesterbanks.com/2013/07/converting-after-effects-warp-stabilizer-to-keyframes-for-more-control-of-stabilization/I think in a case where I need the stabilization to fade, I would use the point tracker or Mocha for stabilizing instead trying to convert my WS to keyframes.
keyframes for WS could be a useful feature for, you can ask for it here. https://www.adobe.com/products/wishform.html

if this is needs to be realistic puff of smoke, I would use a stock footage element of a puff of smoke recorded live on black background and use the screen blend mode or remove the black through some matte removing procedure or plugin. you could try to recreate this yourself with the particular plugin but this could take some time. if you want it to look cartoon like then it’s shape layer a-la cell animation (requires a lot of practice) or use a bought preset: google “flash FX Elements”

November 20, 2016 at 2:42 am in reply to: Lights Refuse to Cast Shadow (CC2015.3 & 2017)I do not see in your workflow a mention of cast shadow in the light itself

if that’s not it, please upload your project file so we may take a gander

tried another machine. this is definitely not working. if this is anyway related to my full bin of image upload, there should be a way to trash it instead of clicking one by one. I tried to delete several but this has not resolved the issue.

it should work. not that on some Mac system there has been a playback problem that was only fixed by the recent 14.0.1 update (CC 2017) https://blogs.adobe.com/creativecloud/after-effects-cc-november-2017-bug-fix-update-is-now-available/
setting your preview panel this way makes sure it will behave like the familiar RAM Preview prior to CC 2015:

notice the cache before playback option.see if that works for you

November 19, 2016 at 2:11 pm in reply to: Is it possible to make a stroke around an object that occludes every layer underneath EXCEPT the background?the solution you offered seems good enough for me ☺ but if you want to get fancy, this could be done with a little precomposing.
here’s how I would approach this:
assuming these are shape layers (the same principle can work for any layer) I would create this setup for the object layer: bottom layer is the fill, upper layer is the stroke.

then I would set the stroke layer blend mode to silhouette alpha mode. it will knock out all opaque layers underneathe

I will precompose this and press the collapse switch so it will respect this setup in my animation comp

now I can duplicate the man layer and its stroke will knock out all layers underneath

after I am done I can pre-compose again, this time not setting the collapse switch. I will add my background layer:

here is my go at it:
1. track the shot – for this I used mocha. just position, rotation, scale and shear

2. apply the transform data to a null. now I have a null that’s pretty close to sticking to the shoe. I can correct it manually in Ae if I need to at the tough spots in the beginning or end.

3.export a frame to photoshop and create my clean plate

4.bring it back and attach it to the null and use a little roto for the masking

5.duplicate the video and mask the flower

well 3 frames is nice but it’s hard to give you any helpful advice based on not even subsequent frames. the way you are describing it, it could be a frame-by-frame solution that if performed with the right workflow can produce good results without being to picky on every frame. remember that no one will be looking for the logo.
if you want more help, you should send the whole shot. you can place a copyright symbol or hide certain parts if you are worried someone will use it.

first make sure you manage expectations about real-time playback in after effects. read here:
https://helpx.adobe.com/after-effects/kb/all-about-previews-in-after-effects-cc-2015–13-5-.htmlAfter Effects is designed to play back frames cached to RAM in real-time. some of the time it is capable of playing back in real-time without caching. this capability has been greatly improved in CC2015.3 And more in CC2017. the exception are certain mac systems but good news – there is a new update fix: https://blogs.adobe.com/creativecloud/after-effects-cc-november-2017-bug-fix-update-is-now-available/ that is supposed to resolve the very annoying playback issues with 10.11 and 10.12 Os. see if it improves the situation on Yosemite as well.

Everybody who is having issues with CC17 (especially playback issues) please install the latest update:
https://blogs.adobe.com/creativecloud/after-effects-cc-november-2017-bug-fix-update-is-now-available/if you can’t see the update yet, wait a while until you see it. try relaunching Creative Cloud app by typing Ctrl+Alt+R.
this update is 14.0.1 and is a bug fix for many disturbing issues especially for Mac users. it does not fix all the bugs that are new with this release – look here for bug#2 and #3 that are still not fixed (bug #1 is fixed I believe): https://helpx.adobe.com/after-effects/kb/known-issues-after-effects-cc-2017.html
