So this should seem like a no-brainer. Maybe I just forgot to turn “Cast Shadow” on for my layer… but I noticed that in both 2015.3 and now 2017, regardless of the renderer I use, compositon, or whatever, a light will refuse to cast shadows when I want it to.

The provided .gif was the result of this exact workflow:

    1. Start new project.
    2. Create new composition
    3. Create Solid > Make 3D > Rotate 90 degrees
    4. Add text > Make 3D > move to where it would obviously cast shadow > turn “Cast Shadow” on
    5. Add light to scene.
    6. Aaaaaand nothing. The solid that would accept the shadow DOES have “Accept Shadows” on. The text for sure has “Cast Shadow” on. This workflow is showing a Classic 3D composition, but it doesn’t matter whether it’s Classic 3D or Raytraced. What the heck am I doing wrong here?

I can’t seem to embed the .gif in the post (even though I’ve done this before), so here is the link to it.

Yes, as #6 in my workflow list above pointed out, the solid is set to accept shadows. The text is set to cast shadows.

I do not see in your workflow a mention of cast shadow in the light itself

if that’s not it, please upload your project file so we may take a gander

    Freaking. Doy.

Thanks guys haha, allow me to blame that on something other than my own obvious oversights.
