May 18, 2017 at 8:30 am in reply to: Flow diagram – a “how to”

That’s a very vague question. Since how it could or should be done is completely dependent on what kind of “flow” needs to be depicted.

  • [Dirk de Jong] “I was thinking that too, but if the 7 objects aren’t the same then maybe not… “

You simply make a movie (or image sequence) of the images and tell the replicator to use a different frame of said movie (or sequence) for each point.

  • Wouldn’t a simple circular, animated Replicator be perfect for this?

May 14, 2017 at 10:25 am in reply to: Still can’t export with transparent background

Actually, there is not globally preferred alpha, be it straight or premultiplied. In the end, if the math is done correctly (i.e. the interpretation is set correctly), then both will deliver perfectly fine results. Some NLE in fact don’t even accept or recognize straight alphas, so at least in that context you’re safer going matted. But fortunately in the case of FCP it’s irrelevant.

So you’ll simply want a) check your project settings in Motion as Bret said and make sure the background isn’t set to SOLID. Because then you can render all day long with any given setting and you’ll never get your alpha.

Then b) check the clip settings IN FCP how the file is being interpreted, i.e. make sure it’s set whatever it is you used and not being ignored (which is actually extremely unlikely with a file coming from Motion).

If EVEN THEN it’s not working, which would be very odd, then you’d have to post the clip or a frame somewhere so one could have a look.

[Eric Sternberger] “when you apply a transition to a clip in the secondary storyline, it will apply it to the beginning & the end of the clip simultaneously “

That can and will only happen if you select the clip and hit ⌘T. In which case that’s absolutely normal and the exact same way it works in the primary as well. If it’s happening any other time, then there’s something wrong with your install.

[Eric Sternberger] “after applying a transition to a clip in secondary, the clip cannot be moved anymore”

Huh?? Of course it can. Only it’ll leave it’s transitions behind. Again, the exact same as in the primary.

[Eric Sternberger] “when you edit Text in a Titel and hit Backspace it will delete the whole Titel, not the Text”

I don’t know what it is you’re doing or what’s up with your machine, but that obviously does NOT happen, since that would obviously be completely ridiculous if that were the case by default or design.

No clue how you could possibly be seeing any of this, therefore that really only leaves PEBKAC.

  • Exactly. When in the canvas hit ⇧T. Do you see a checkerboard pattern where you expect your transparency, a lá Photoshop? If not, then there is something wrong with your project settings, there’s a rogue layer or the likes. If you DO see it but aren’t getting your alpha with the export settings as described above, then I for one am stumped…

When in doubt, copy/paste everything into a brand new project and check matters there (hitting ⇧T before pasting).

[Scott Witthaus] “they are pushing us hard to get a CC site license for our university.”

Same here. We have one. Anyone at the school can get a year’s worth of CC for some ridiculously low price. Brilliant marketing, that’s for sure. Get ’em while they’re young and unencumbered! ????

But a few already had their first really rude awakening after they left the school and realized what that meant in terms of keeping CC. For them, Apple’s education pricing was perfectly timed and much appreciated. ????

[Oliver Peters] “Also Apple officially announced that FCPX now has 2 million seats.”

Interesting. The last official (not estimated) numbers from Adobe mid last year were that they had 4.252 million CC subscribers in total. And I think we all know which app(s) the vast majority of those subscribers are actually using.

I’ve always wondered if there is even any way that Adobe can say for sure how many people are using any one app. I don’t see how the can do anything but guess. But I suspect there are some at least semi-reliable techniques…

  • [Craig Seeman] “Perhaps this is what we’ll see (or the subsequent generation) in next year’s Mac Pro.”

I doubt Apple will make the mistake of using “old” GPU tech again in the next round. We’re supposedly at least a year away from anything, and by then there’ll have been all kinds of new developments from both major GPU manufacturers. But something like this most definitely will have to at least be POSSIBLE, yes. I don’t know why Apple has seemingly turned their back completely on Nvidia (and don’t really care), but who knows if the next MP doesn’t mark a return. At least optionally. Especially if they are once again considered the most powerful. Never mind the people that have bought into CUDA being the non-plus-ultra.

But then, to offer true modularity, I think there’s no getting around slots of sorts, in which case they may simply offer a bare-bones BTO that you can feed with whatever you think best. Either way, I’m very eager to see what happens as I’m sure pretty much everyone is! ????

[Jeremy Garchow] “is this what you are talking about?”

Why waste your time? You and I know what’s possible, because we actually use FCP and know what we’re talking about. The only reason for the question is to point to the fact that there are no refractions, caustics etc. yadda yadda, since FCP of course does not have them because it obviously does not use a raytracer (duh). (Not that that is the only way to get them) As if anyone using an NLE for that kind of work could or would even ever miss that or think they could expect it along with that level of speed and quality. And if so, they’re simply looking in the wrong place. So what? If that’s so essential, I’m guessing you’re smart enough to use an actual, dedicated 3D app and an NLE.

But that’s apparently being very presumptuous in certain cases. ????
