Why would you do that for what you are doing? There’s absolutely no need for detaching.

Also no need for either of those, unless of course you have multi-channel audio that you want to level separately. Simply double-click the audio “track” of any given clips to expand the audio or OPTION-click to expand audio components… if even needed. You can set keyframes without any of that by simply OPTION-clicking on the levels bar or “rubber band”. If the waveforms aren’t showing, then your timeline display may simply be too small. Just choose any of the other 5 options and/or enlarge the overall display size.

Any discrepancies will be due to the color management of the individual browser or lack thereof. It’s not FCP’s fault. My guess would be that you e.g. see no difference in Safari compared to FCP X. That’s what you’ll want to go by. There is no “consistent colors for non-existent color management” setting.

Sorry, not trying to be thick, but I just don’t get it. The whole thing makes little sense to me. There’s either a kink in my train of thought or yours. Because if you’re taking the proxies with you, why should you care if they are in the library, in an extra folder or wherever? If you copy the library e.g. from a server which contains the proxies, then you have the exact same files for/on each. The only thing that could possibly change would be render files, data files or cache files, all of which are irrelevant since they’d simply be regenerated as needed. Aside from that, just the “CurrentVersion.fcpevent” files which are tiny and, as I’ve said before, can be copied as and if needed. Elegant? No, but easily done.

What am I missing?

I don’t doubt that at some point the (separate) relinking of proxies is bound to happen, but then that is a very unique workflow imho, so much that I doubt is very high up on the list. IF it’s on the list. I can’t think of any NLE that would allow that exact workflow either, unless something has happened with updates recently that I missed.

You can’t just simply double-click or import an old project file. FCP has to convert it first. For that you simply copy the old folder structure (“Final Cut Pro Events” etc.) to the top level of any external disk or into your Movies folder (otherwise it’ll ask you where it is and you have to navigate to it) and simply choose “Update Project and Events” from the File menu.

Or you can simply choose “Reimport from camera/archive” if you haven’t in fact erased the card the clips came from (which you obviously hadn’t). Done. That’s what it’s for.

I would transcode either way, if only for the far superior colorspace that ProRes offers plus the improved performance. But whether that is in fact the problem remains to be seen. I’m guessing… yes.

Yeah, the TC generator used to be able to read *source* TC from clips in the timeline, but that broke with (I think) 10.0.5 for some odd reason. FCP definitely needs that back. A generator that can read source TC and/or date/time for that matter. Put this on radar a loooong time ago. Might want to up the vote by sending feedback also. 😉

Well, you could technically just copy the “Current Version” file to and from the library. But I don’t understand why you’re even copying anything. If you have it locally, then you simply need to connect the volume with the original footage and switch. Done. No copying needed.

And no, there is no separate relinking of proxies. If you choose Relink, FCP automatically assumes you’re wanting to relink the original/optimized. Which is why it’s detrimental to do that and point to the proxies. After that your proxies are considered the original/optimized and any existing files of sorts are deleted.

Well, I actually bought the recorders. Still have a studio S-VHS (with TBC and all) and a “cheap” UVW-1800P standing here gathering dust. All in all about $30K+ worth of dust. Missed the window for selling them. *sigh*

If you mean centered horizontally AND vertically relative to the content, then simply change the layout method from “Type” to “Paragraph”. The same as if you drag out a text field with the text tool instead of simply clicking with it.
