I would create a new Sequence in your browser with DV/NTSC settings. If you want it letterboxed, make it 720X480. If you want it anamorphic, simply check the anamorphic box in the sequence settings menu.
Nest your HD sequence in the SD sequence by dragging it from your browser and dropping it into your SD timeline. It should fill your scale own into your canvas perfectly.
Then File > Print to Tape
OR
I suppose your could use Compressor to downconvert to DV/NTSC. Then bring that new file into a new project and do a File > Print to Tape.

hmm…you haven’t mentioned it, so I have to ask, are you using an external monitor? If you are using Color, what you see in Color will look VERY different when you send it back to FCP. So you need an external monitor to know exactly what you’re looking at.
I agree with the ProRes comment as well. Regular ProRes is all you need, not ProRes HQ.

the .png works! who woulda thunk?
Strange…I really have no idea what the problem was with the .tif. Like I said, it’s been the norm for me, but it’s nice to know I can use .png if I have problems again in the future. I had no idea .png supported alpha channels.

ok i’ll give that a shot. That’s strange though, I’ve never had a problem using alpha channels on .tif. In a tutorial on the COW, Rich Harrington even suggests using the .tif

not using ProRes HQ might help since you don’t need it with that resolution. I’m not sure what problems occur when you use HQ when you don’t need it though, so I’m not positive if changing to regular ProRes will help.
Also, are you fully rendered? Are you looking at an external monitor or just the FCP canvas

I THINK you will have to use the frame rate converter. I believer if you record DVCPro HD to tape, it’s ALWAYS recording 59.94

Umm..i don’t think ProRes comes with Final Cut Express. If you convert to DVCPro HD, that will preserve your quality. I read a lot of people did that with HDV before ProRes came along

Are they installed? Go to:
Mac HD > Library > Quicktime and make sure the codec is there

Exporting to ProRes doesn’t make your footage look better. You can’t do anything to make it better…sorta. I guess color grading makes it look better.
And also, if you’ve recorded DVCProHD, you only need to export your stuff as regular ProRes. HQ is for sources originating in 10-bit color depth and/or 2k or higher resolution.
As for exporting for the web, I personally like to export an H.264 file and post a quicktime on my website. Quicktime isn’t as popular as Flash though.

might be able to change your RT settings to unlimited and dynamic for frame rate and quality. you will still have to render, but you may still be able to play back
