DVC PRO HD Digitize
Posted by Daniel Garriga on April 7, 2010 at 2:46 pmHello all,
Ive been digitizing about 30 tapes in DVCPRO HD using a Deck via Firewire 400. Why is it that some tapes are digitized at 59.94 and some at 23.97 fps??? I set it to one frame rate and it keeps digitizing at those different rates.
Also, I need to multiclip this footage. I just tried and it wont let me because the frame rates are different! Is there any way around this besides making new quicktimes to the right frame rate!?
Thanks. Using Final Cut Pro 6.0.6

April 7, 2010 at 2:48 pmI THINK you will have to use the frame rate converter. I believer if you record DVCPro HD to tape, it’s ALWAYS recording 59.94

It sure is. The deck plays out at 59.94 and when you capture, you’ll then have to remove those flagged frames. I learned the hard way. We shot 24p to tape and when I digitized it was 59.94. I had to use Cinema Tools to remove the pulldown to get it back to 24p or 23.98.

The Panasonic Frame Rate Converter is much easier for this and it works right in Final Cut Pro. This is how we’ve been handling this for years now.

April 7, 2010 at 3:25 pmThanks for these responses. I think I am about to learn the hard way as we speak. My production manager is gonna kill me!
But why are the tapes capturing at 59.94 sometimes and 23.98 sometimes!? It’s really random

April 7, 2010 at 3:36 pmI just did one clip in the DVC PRO HD frame converter from 59.94 to 23.98 but when I played the converted clip back it didnt have any sound.
In the conversion options i selected: 23.98, Remove Duplicate Frames, and Make Self Contained File. I didnt check Import result into FCP.

April 7, 2010 at 5:18 pmFCP sees flags. If the footage is flagged at 24p, then it captures it as 23.98. If the camera wasn’t set to 24p, then the flags weren’t set, and it captures it as 59.94. The 59.94 stuff, does it look REALLY SMOOTH? or does it have the 24p look?

April 7, 2010 at 5:53 pmIt has a 24p look for sure! Doesnt have soap operaey, news at 6 look.
I figured out a way around this I think. Im making DVC PRO HD 29.97 SEQ’s and dropping the footage in this and syncing IN the timeline rather than multiclipping. It seems to be working just fine. I chose 29.97 because i am also making DVDs for transcription with burnt in timecode and the timecode character display from the deck is going to 29 frames.

April 20, 2010 at 9:02 pmWalter, the DVC HD Frame rate convertor tells me it will only work with 720p material. I have 1080p material. So is Cinema Tools my only option then for reverse telecine and getting back to 23.98?
