  • Hello Dennis,
A few years ago I I decided on a simple solution to running FCP7 — keep my old Macbook Pro with the Mountain Lion OS 10.8.5 software installed (now I’m running Premiere CC 2013 on it) and buy a new machine to run newer software. (Inspired by Larry Jordan.) When Apple pushed Mojave I made a bootable USB drive for High Sierra, just in case. I use a backup software called Superduper! (yes with the exclamation point!) that makes bootable clones of all the my Macs. The Airbook running Mojave does run DaVinci Resolve even with just 8 Gb Ram and am thinking about that for new projects. Premiere seemed like the natural successor to FCP7, but I tired of it with its constant updates, user complaints about update glitches, and pricey rental system. Newer editing software has a conceptual difference from FCP7, in that both Premiere and Resolve keep edited files as internal proprietary “database” files instead of free-standing files that are worked on by the software.
This is not an answer to your sophisticated idea about an external bootable drive but it’s how I constructed a workaround, with my need to keep working on “legacy” projects without conversion.
    Hope this helps a little.
    Best wishes, Robert

    Hi all,
USBs work well and can carry large HD files.
Does anyone use software for creating autorun menus on USB sticks or flash drives?
    (I would need Mac)
It would be nice to distribute several movies on a stick.
    Thanks,
    Robert

  • Hi Ty and Bruce,
Friends of mine who work in performance and recorded audio use programs like Audacity (free) and Appleton Live to edit and mix sound. I just realized I have another free sound mixing program, called Fairlight, that is part of Black Magic’s DaVinci Resolve editing suite (free version). I’m looking forward to learning more of that. Cheers,

  • Codecs and containers — they’re different. .mov and .mp4 are containers. Codecs live inside of containers. I have to look these up every time. I think h264 is a codec that can live in a .mov or .mp4. ProRes is an HD mezzanine codec that can run inside a .mov container. You can look up these things–I do over and over.

This thread’s a little confusing — “studio design” is not about audio. When you look for your SFX, remember you may get best results by layering/mixing a few individual SFX.

May be a side issue but heads up — shots from mini-DV tapes came into my FCP long ago from stereo audio tracks (from a stereo mic) as double mono. After transfer to Premiere they are locked in as dual mono and it’s a devilish task to edit and mix them.
I don’t know how folks edit double mono tracks like this in FCP7 — do you have to keep duplicating levels and effects for each?

    Hi Sarah,
What are your timeline specs, what codec, and what are you exporting to?
Does Premiere send you to AME for export?
I always transcode to ProRes for editing — never saw this.

Resolve 15 is running on my 2017 Macbook Air with 8 GB RAM. Not trying to do any heavy lifting. Download and try it was the only advice I could get so I did and it worked.

Thanks TC. I am that one client. In fact I am my own client. I’ve been making independent films since about 1970, like some of my friends. We archive our films for the life of the films. I recently attended a screening of a friend’s film at the New York City Museum of Modern Art which film was released in 1985, Lots of people remembered that film and that filmmaker ☺

Nice to know what people are doing in the 5-8-year life span industry.

What most of us have been doing is digitizing celluloid to hard drives as needed, and copying and backing up hard drives to other drives and buying new computers with new operating systems and churning away like this forever.

Best wishes; live long and prosper!

System Pref doesn’t work.? Check router? Netgear Support is helpful with this stuff for a price.
