I took the plunge and got the upgrade to the premium collection professional using my copy of photoshop. Of course this now means I have 2 licenses of Adobe After Effects Pro (allbeit one is version 6.5 and one is 7.0). Anyone know if you can sell an old license like that? Or does Adobe pretty much frown on that?

Now I’m looking at the mailbox eagerly anticipating the box 🙂

In past experience with a minor league hockey team where I live, they drove a really hard bargain and squeezed a package deal that barely made it worth it. If you are looking for something to start a professional reel with, it’s better than working for free but I wouldn’t try to feed my family with it.

quick Addendum… Intel Pentium D processors are being phased out. You would be better off getting one of the newer Core Duos. 🙂

I have a Intel Core Duo Laptop 1.6 Ghz with only 1 GB ram and I can say that it gives my dual 2Ghz Mac G5 at work a run for it’s money let alone a single Intel 3Ghz processor. My money’s on the new Intel chips. I’ve been working on a new computer budget next year to get one of these beauts.

You Could go the really wacky route and stabilze the end part of the jib and slice up the video into 2 chunks (sky and ground). Clean the flare out of the ground layer and duplicate several layers of it, spacing them out and cloning over the edges. Use AE to simulate a similar camera pan using the the precomped ground layer, futzing things around as necessary. Once your camera move is done, you can replace the sky with whatever you want since you now control the camera motion.

It involves quite a bit of elbow grease, but less than it would take to rotoscope that whole mess.

I would love it if AE would carry the OpenGL implementation over to their effects like corner pin. That way it would be a realtime polygon deformation, it would also open the door to more flexibilty in distortions that are actually reflected in 3D space.

Since 1 unit = 1 pixel in AE’s 3D space, you can make a DVD case in Photoshop (making sure to maintain scale). You may encounter some funkiness around the edges but if you position things out properly and utilize nulls, you should be able to work out a fake 3D effect.

If you’re really patient, you could try and use Invigorator but in my case I would just use lightwave 😉

Financially speaking, it may be in your interest to look into Combustion. Admittedly I haven’t played with Combustion recently but I am relatively familiar with the way discreet handles things. I’ve heard (as no doubt you may have as well) that AE is potentially going to include Silhoutte’s roto tools in the next version. I can say that I’ve had pretty good success with AE’s Primatte plugin and it’s rotoscoping tools (Bezier, haven’t had an opportunity to use rotobezier yet which is supposed to make things easier). I miss good ‘ol Commotion 😉

Another application you might want to look into is Eyeon’s Digital Fusion. If you’re familiar with node-based effects, it’s pretty powerful.

I have used this similarly for orbiting footage and such. The question that sticks out is that do you turn auto orient off for this to work properly. I can imagine that the point of interest would become a hinderance for some moves. I’ll have to futz around with it today when I get a chance.

It tries to be. It’s close…. very close but it lacks a little in oranges and such.
