Hey all I have been offered a position working with the Idaho Steelheads (minor league hockey team) My primary job responsibilities are to do video, animation, and graphics. I will work with the Director of Marketing and Promotions and on top of this I’ll be doing the graphic and animation for the Idaho Stampeded (d-league NBA team) and the new arena football team coming here to Boise. I was wondering if anyone has experience working for a sports orginization, and the pro’s and con’s. Is it a place where one can make a decent living? If anyone has any input I’d appreciate it.

    Thanks,
    -Matt

Is it a new postion or are you replacing someone. If the latter, see what they think and why they left. Also, you obviously would want to enjoy the sport. Is it a successful franchise? Is their fanbase solid? It’s kind of like looking at the strength of a company before taking a job with their internal comm dept. How about the Marketing Director? Do you like him/her.

In past experience with a minor league hockey team where I live, they drove a really hard bargain and squeezed a package deal that barely made it worth it. If you are looking for something to start a professional reel with, it’s better than working for free but I wouldn’t try to feed my family with it.

Not having any direct experience with this, but living in a market where the people I work with freelance for a minor league hockey franchise, I would say that here (Manchester, NH) it pays barely better than our Production Assistant position; barely enough to get by, and requiring a second job with the prices of rent and gas these days.

I won’t discourage you from it, because it could well be the reel-builder you’re looking for, and could get your career moving. If you’re single and like the sport, go for it. It will probably involve a small enough crew (in addition to your position) that you will end up learning everything, which is a valuable asset in these days of specialization. Good luck!

Thanks all for the comments. It pays around 35k and additional compensation for detailed animations outside my job req. It comes with full benefits and a decent perk package. I’m going to take it for my wife works as well and right now we dont need a ton to survive, but I just feel that I need to get on a good career path, and sports is defenitely the area I want to go in. I’ll be learning a lot about marketing and promotions which can help me secure a marketing job someday if needed. As far as a carreer track move will this give me enough to get a better job in the future? I also have signed up to be a freelancing chyron operator for the Utah Jazz next year.

    Thanks again,
    Matt

    Hi MAtt:
I have been in the Sports arena for a lot of years. Currently at MSG-Network. You can make a good living, but like everything else it’s all about timing. There is no such thing as luck! it’s opportunity meeting preparedness. Our industry is changing with technology, stick to your guns, show ’em what your worth, and make ’em pay ya right.
    Best of luck
    Roy
