Just a thought – but if the disc is showing up OK in XDCAM Transfer, maybe it’s as simple as the Finder preferences?
Have a look at Finder > Preferences, go to the General tab and look at the “Show these items on the Desktop” options. You need a check against “CDs, DVDs, and iPods” for XDCAM discs to appear on the Desktop.
By the way, you can rename XDCAM discs in XDCAM Transfer! I don’t know about version 2.1, but if you upgrade to the latest version 2.7, in the main XDCAM Transfer window, you just select the disc in the Source list, go to the Information tab (bottom right), and edit the Source > Name.
I don’t need to eject and re-insert the disc for the name change to work either.

So you’ve got FCP 6.0.3…
Are you using XDCAM Transfer 2.7.0?
What does it say about the XDCAM EX codec in the ‘Installed Components’ window that may appear when the app launches, or you can open from the Help menu?
Apple shipped the XDCAM EX as an update to the AppleHDVCodec.component file that should be in /Library/QuickTime.
In Finder, if you do ‘Get Info’ on this file, in order to have XDCAM EX, you want to see at least the “Version 1.3.2 (v216)” that ships with FCP 6.0.2.
If you see an earlier version number, that’s your problem…
How you get the right version, I’m not sure!

What version of XDCAM Transfer were you using?
This trouble might have been fixed in the latest version 2.7, which you could get from here:

It was an FCP 6.0.2 bug, not an XDCAM Transfer bug. It’s fixed in FCP 6.0.3 so if you’ve recently upgraded that’ll be why the duplicates have gone away!

May 23, 2008 at 10:12 am in reply to: At Wit’s End: “No Image” when trying to view clips in XD CAm Transfer and FCPOK, that’s good info. I suspect that both Sarah and you have the same problem: an FCP install/upgrade that didn’t quite work right.
As Andy said, the HDV codecs are one and the same as the XDCAM HD “SP” and XDCAM EX “SP” (25 Mb/s CBR) codecs. FCP has mostly supported these since FCP 5.1. The XDCAM Transfer 2.7 “Installed Components” window says Apple added XDCAM HD “HQ” (35 Mb/s VBR) in FCP 5.1.2 and the XDCAM EX “HQ” (35 Mb/s VBR) codecs in FCP 6.0.2.
Since all these codecs are really variants of each other, Apple ship them all as part of the AppleHDVCodec.component file that should be in /Library/QuickTime.
In Finder, if you do ‘Get Info’ on this file, you want to see at least the “Version 1.3.2 (v216)” that ships with FCP 6.0.2.
Since XDCAM Transfer is telling you it can’t find the XDCAM EX codecs, I’m guessing you’ll see an earlier version number…
How you get the right version, I’m not sure!

George,
Do you happen to have MXF files of XDCAM EX clips, here?
It looks like XDCAM Transfer 2.5.1 handles XDCAM EX correctly in its original .MP4 wrapping, but gets confused when it sees those same codecs in an MXF wrapping.
Good news for you if this is the case, as it seems to be fixed in XDCAM Transfer 2.7.0 –

May 22, 2008 at 4:43 pm in reply to: Sony EX1 – 59.94 or 29.97? Please Help Emergency!!.The XDCAM EX camcorder can shoot 720p60 too, as well as 1080i60.
In XDCAM Transfer these appear with ‘Frame Rate’ of 59.94p and 59.94i respectively.
In FCP, they are shown as ‘Vid Rate’ of 59.94 and 29.97 respectively. The sequence presets are ‘XDCAM EX 720p60 VBR’ and ‘XDCAM EX 1080i60 VBR’ respectively.
Hope that helps!

May 22, 2008 at 4:33 pm in reply to: Sony EX-1 and FCP workflow – error message “Pro Codecs Required”Strange. FCP 6.0.3 definitely comes with all the XDCAM codecs, so it sounds like XDCAM Transfer thinks your FCP install is out-of-order.
Have you tried installing XDCAM Transfer 2.7.0? Looks like this version has a new window which gives much more detail than just “Pro Codecs Required”. (Help > Installed Components shows it too if it doesn’t appear at start up.)
XDCAM Transfer 2.7.0 is at https://www.sony.co.uk/biz/view/ShowContent.action?contentId=1203501581812.

XDCAM EX uses a different file wrapper (.MP4) than XDCAM on Professional Disc (MXF). The .MP4 files recorded by XDCAM EX are the hi-res clips; there’s no proxy on XDCAM EX.
The XDCAM Transfer app supports both PPC and Intel, and Tiger and Leopard; it’s only the Clip Browser software that is Intel-only.
XDCAM Transfer supports import to FCP from all flavours of XDCAM, but as you guess, in the case of XDCAM EX you need to offload the files off the SxS cards carefully so that XDCAM Transfer recognizes them.
For each original SxS card you want to offload, you need to create a new folder on your hard disk and copy the entire BPAV folder off the card into that.
Don’t rename the BPAV folder.
Don’t try to combine more than one card.
Don’t try just grabbing the .MP4 files.
If you do this, the clips should show up in XDCAM Transfer just fine.
Best to use latest XDCAM Transfer (2.7.0) and latest FCP (6.0.3). There are bug fixes in both for XDCAM EX support.

Go here: https://www.sony.co.uk/biz/view/ShowContent.action?contentId=1203501581812
Download the SxS PRO Device Driver. This will mean SxS cards that you insert in your MacBook Pro’s ExpressCard/34 slot will appear on your Desktop.
Then, depending on what you want to do next, download XDCAM Transfer 2.7.0, which will enable you to view the clips on your card, and import the clips into Final Cut Pro (6.0.3 is recommended).
