[Uli Plank] “I second that, you’ll get remarkable speed.
But please keep in mind that RAID 0 has no safety net. On the contrary, the risk of loosing data is multiplied with striped drives, so make sure to always keep a backup.”Okay, I was thinking that I would not RAID the drives inside the MP… It seems that most people (video professionals) do not. And, when they need something fast they go with external RAIDS… If I RAID the drives internally (4), I will have no room for a startup drive… Now, I’m wondering how best to utilize the MP internal capacity. I guess I will use single drives (NO RAID) and will simply enjoy the capacity using at least one drive for backup of some data…
BTW: I was thinking about going with the Hitachi 500gb drives since G-Technology and Promax are using them exclusively. The numbers I’ve gathered seem to favor other mechanisms in terms of performance… yet, I respect their decisions and don’t feel compelled to duplicate their research.
Thoughts?
Thanks,
Robert

[walter biscardi] “As for the laptop, sure 3GB is great because FCP itself can use 2GB RAM.”
Okay, sounds like the MBP with 3GBs RAM is worth the premium.

Do you recommend setting up a RAID internally or just use as single drives?

[David Roth Weiss] “they are not as fast as Maxtor’s Maxline drives, which remain my favorites.”
Was the performance difference noticeable?

[David Roth Weiss] “I have (6) Hitachi 500gb drives and they have been running fine for the 3 months I’ve owned them, although they are not as fast as Maxtor’s Maxline drives, which remain my favorites. BTW, Maxlines are enterprise level drives.”
Why did you not buy the Maxtor drives? What source do you recommend? OWC no longer sells Maxtor.
I thought about getting two or three different drives to make my own observations; yet, buying 4 of the same mechanism (or at least two) allows me to RAID them if I desire.
How important is raiding the internal drives for: Aperture; Photoshop; DV50; HDV; DVCPro HD; maybe some uncompressed SD?
BTW: I was not aware that the optical bay could be used like Shane described–anyone doing that?
Many thanks,
Robert

[Shane Ross] “But, for now, I’d recommend the Hitachi’s. And if you did it my way, you could raid all four drives…”
Okay, these are not the fastest drives and the MTBF rating is lower than some… Yet, I respect your opinion as I do David’s.
Thanks,
Robert

v[Aujom Productions] “Before you lose it and shove a BSG-50 up my $&*@!, riddle me this…”
LOL… God, I love the way you put that!

[walter biscardi] “It needs to be configured correctly or you won’t get the performance you’re expecting.”
Walter, with your experience… what do you typically do to your FCP configurations?
Also, did you get your Mac Pro yet? If so, please comment… is it ready to displace your QUAD G5 suite?
Thanks,
Robert

I’ve known and used Promax for a variety of solutions over the years…. I knew (and loved) the founder, Charles McConathy for more than 16 years–WOW, what a giver.
With that said, I’m troubled by the fact that external monitoring solutions (waveform monitors/vectorscopes), over the past several years, are not recommended, and not specified (in any situation), and are not available on request. They simply don’t understand that there is such a need to see what video is doing in the analog domain. I understand that there are some rather new alternatives that some are using with success (Walter?); yet, for many proper external test equipment is not an option it’s a necessity. Anyway, that’s my only gripe…
So, I have used, recommended, and appreciated Promax with no regrets–Thanks Promax! Also, I do consider them for future needs as well; yet, they were more helpful to me personally in the early days.
