[walter biscardi] “Absolutely unnecessary for an NLE system editing in DV or DVCAM. RS-422 is only useful if you still have a linear system that needs RS-422 for control.”

Is there no benefit–I thought there was? Let me see… Is there a: frame-accuracy, or, Insert Edit, or, some other benefit?

Thanks for the clarification–I know what you said above is very clear “NO BENEFIT”; yet, I wanted to make sure.

    Thanks,

    Robert

  • [gary adcock] “No, my G5 is sill humming along (even after 18 months on the road and shipping 72 times via fedex)
and the best part is all of my adobe apps run on it without issue.”

    Wow–that’s impressive! I thought I was busy. 🙂

Thanks, I appreciate the quick response.

  • Gary, have you retired your G5 in favor of the Mac Pro? Any comments on performance…?

How have you configured your MP system? How much RAM, etc?

    Thanks,

    Robert

[Bob Zelin] “I am almost afraid to ask, but if you bought an AJA I/O – what is your full time gig ?
I hope that you are in the video business, and this is not a hobby for you . “

Bob, why can’t a hobbyist make use of an AJA IO?

    Thanks,

    Robert

  • [Bob Zelin] “After that, all the black generators are EXPENSIVE.”

Bob, does it make sense to buy a higher-end professional generator–any worthy benefits? BTW: I would most likely want to purchase the pro models on the used market–the cheaper models you mentioned could go either way (new or used).

As a cost saving measure, would it be worth it to pickup either the cheaper models or the pro generators via the used market? I know for some items, buying used is not worth the hassle or the risk.

    Thanks,

    Robert

  • Bob,

Are there any BB/SG units that you prefer over the Horita line? I prefer something rack-mountable and hight quality.

    Thanks,

    Robert

September 1, 2006 at 2:11 pm in reply to: MAC Pro and SATA don’t work !

[Bob Zelin] “…do you have customers waiting to edit in your room? Do you need a computer now? Since you have “limited resources”, I guess that expensive storage is not an option for you – correct ? Or is this a hobby ? If you have to edit RIGHT NOW, and can afford a HUGE or Medea array or XServe RAID, get the Mac Pro – if you need SATA , and can’t wait a month – get the Quad. “

No customers waiting to edit, just personal projects that involve: scanning film (thousands of 120mb files–Nikon, Aperture, etc.); video editing (FC Studio); using CS2 and MX Studio; database development (4D)… I need a computer now. We all have limited resources… I was wondering if it was worth it to fool with both the QUAD G5 and the MP since it would take time to test them and I would incurr some shipping charges, etc… Expensive storage is an option; yet, I would want to understand the benefits of such. If I can afford it, why go with the spiffy array? Also, what’s the MP issue with the SATA storage? I guess this is only a problem with external SATA boxes. I can wait a month… BTW: it might take me several weeks to get either system in place anyway.

[Bob Zelin] “the Mac Pro will be obsolete by Mid 2007, so you will be screwed “

What are we expecting to happen–Mid 2007?

    Thanks,

    Robert

Guys, speaking of these two computers… G5 & Mac Pro (MP), I have a chance to bring in a G5 QUAD system and a MP system; yet, it would take some resources (time, money, etc)… Is it worth taking the G5 for a test-drive at this point? Or, should I just focus on the MP (ignoring the short-term G5 benefits) and work through any issues it may have?

BTW: I use some software development tools that only run under Rosetta which has revealed a Rosetta bug that causes incorrect numeric calculations–basically a conversions and rounding error, if I recall correctly.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks,

    Robert

August 28, 2006 at 8:58 pm in reply to: How Much RAM for Mac Pro?

[walter biscardi] “I want some more in a few months, the prices will have dropped some and then I’ll load more.”

Yes, this makes sense and it may be the way that I go; however, there is one issue with that approach, the Mac Pro memory architecture is already much slower from a latency standpoint than the G5 and it is made worse by going with more than 4 DIMMS. Less than 4 DIMMS does not use the full bandwidth…. so the key number is 4, no more no less. Now, the 6ms hit for each DIMM-hop might not be noticeable in real-world operations; yet, just a thought. So, if you know you need more than 4gb, and want the best possible performance you will want to get the 4 X 2, 8gb configuration.

Also, there may not be much of a price drop as many are expecting… This memory is not as widely used and it is more complex (more expensive to manufacture) than previous DIMMS used in the G5.

Another thought, I think the Mac Pro will require more ram due to Rosetta and possibly other reasons related to the quad-core Intel architecture.

    Thanks,

    Robert

April 6, 2006 at 4:30 pm in reply to: Need to add SETUP to view DV on NTSC monitor?

    Yes, IMHO, it is required.

Also, last I checked you needed a DSR-1500 deck or better in the Sony line to get one to Add Setup… Sadly most decks and camcorders do not provide this feature.

    FWIW,

    Robert
