Ron and Graeme, what external scopes do you use (or that you have found most useful)?

How does your scope connect to your system?

How do you use it? I have done the following; yet, I feel compelled to learn more… I’d like to know how you use your scopes during a typical project.

I know of the following uses:

    1) Setup TBC/ProcAmps (via bars) to match in a linear A/B Roll Edit Suite.

    2) To verify proper Black-level when going A to D or D to A.

    3) Optimize luminance without clipping…

    4) optimize saturation without getting illegal… (clipping?)

    5) Detect illegal colors… I have not done this but I know that certain Tektronix units like the 1760 will allow such info to be easily detected. This may be hard to see on the popular 1720/1730 series..

    6) Setup TBC/ProcAmps based on bars for incoming raw footage or dubs, etc…

Any other uses? Please describe your use. Some scopes will show the offending parts of the signal on the picture monitor via strobing… Is this a useful feature?

    Many thanks,

    Robert

Ron, back in the day when I started editing (1980’s) with 3/4″ I was monitoring composite…. Now I’m shooting with DV and mastering to DVCAM or other digital SD formats–so, what signal should I be monitoring? On my DSR-1500A I can monitor: composite, y/c, CAV, FireWire, and SDI (optionally).

Also, I have a need to archive some footage (Hi-8 to DVCAM) via a transcoding TBC that will allow Y/C in and CAV out.

    Okay, to simply monitor composite?

    What do you recommend?

    Thanks,

    Robert
