Which AJA card? Mine will output SD live, as well as capture it live. It does the downconvert in real time – just like the 525 card in my HDCAM deck. Of course we’re NTSC for the SD, so maybe there’s a difference there.
And which Editbox? (never really liked them, to be honest, very kludgey) It can use only SD?Non-linear: all the time and nothing but.

I’ve been using Squeeze for h.264 because it was a LOT faster than compressor. I had to uncheck “maintain aspect ratio” and let it be freeform and then set the aspect ratio as stated above. But now I’m using Elgato’s h.264 turbo HD dongle and it’s presets. It’s sinfully fast.

It’s probably overkill for a lot of what you’re doing, but it’s a great tool. What’s happened is that so many elements in the other modules have caught up in capability, so you’d go to something like Shake only if you needed it. But if you can get your hands on a copy for cheap, get it. That’s what I did when we upgraded to FCS2. We hardly ever open it, though.

Ideally you have all the tools. I like AE for some things and Motion for others. I use STP mostly but Adobe’s sound system has some great repair stuff. The CS5 Premiere is reported to be very good.

and you should get them to look at things like or mediasilo or syncvue. I’ve been using them for years and they really work out well. No physical media. Systems are slick and fast. Syncview lets clients and creatives work together on the same piece. Mediasilo is easy and lets a client review without you having to wait around.
