I LOVE Color. It’s Definitely worth getting into if you’re at all serious about how your footage works. All the tutorials mentioned are very good. And so is the series at Lynda.com, which while it doesn’t have the depth, will bring you up to speed quickly.
I just finished a show which normally I’d spend a week in final color and adjustments. I flew through it in a total of 5 hours. Of course now that I’ve done that I can’t wait to go through again and make more grading choices. At the time I didn’t have the time to do what I really wanted to do, but the look was great and fast. And this is true HD from HDCAM at full 1920×1080 in ProRes HQ. I was able to “rescue” shots that normally would have been tossed. And instead of being passable, they look great.I don’t know about adding monitors to an iMac. I have MacPros with dual 23″ displays, and then MacBook Pros with extra displays (23″ offbrand) for working at home, though not for color grading. Plus we’re monitoring on external monitors out of the Kona cards.
I do have a 19″ Sony Broadcast HD monitor for sale . . . 🙂

I’m running SL on the MBP laptop 15 with 4 gigs. The two Mac Pros at the studio are running Leopard with 8 gigs and 8 cores. All have FCS 3. The upgrade to FCS has been worth the price. Lots of little oddities gone and nice little things added. My only complaint is that STP is less stable and seems to have a memory leak or something. For some reason, apparently SL, everything on the laptop seems to run better and faster and STP is a lot more stable there too.

we need a little more information. How are you exporting?
1-via FCP or Compressor, or other means
2-what are your settings? especially the bit rate and frame size.Non-linear: all the time and nothing but.

Sure. Take a look at the manual under “relinking media.”
And get yourself another hard drive to store the original files on–get them off your machine.Non-linear: all the time and nothing but.

There’s nothing to correct. You chose to shoot on an HD. What is there to correct? Tell us what you’re trying to accomplish?

ah, the “HD” frame size is considerably larger than the SD NTSC frame size. There’s nothing to be confused about, (ironically inserted)

I too, remember doing that. It was a real pain.

Lots of people like it. I think it’s a bit too full of artifacts for what you pay for it. But then I’ve been “stuck” with HDcam for about 8 years now, so it’s hard for me to look at much else. Though I’d like to get rid of the big camera and go to something smaller and lighter after all these years.
