CompressorTranscoder (Not Responding) sucking up all my CPU!!!
Hey friend,
I’ve searched, and weird thing is that most of the posts I find regarding this are from around 2004… and none of them really address the issue, which is this:
Anytime I use Final Cut, and quit, I notice that my CPU’s (all 8 of them) bounce between 25-90% used – even when there is NO OTHER PROGRAMS actively running.
Upon running Activity monitor I notice:
CompressorTranscoder (not responding) sucking up 400 of my CPU, 40 threads and about 900 megs of real memory.
also I see a UserEventAgent (not responding) not using any cpu, just frozen.Force Quitting these are useless. They just reload. The only thing that knocks them out is a restart.
Anyone have this solved? Please? Its a friggin nightmare.

Which OS version and which version of FCP?

I have noticed the same problem with Compressortranscoder not responding but the job goes through to completion. Using the latest Leopard OS (not snow leopard) and FCS 3 on a MacBook Pro.

I recall it, too. And I don’t recall what fixed it, but it is fixable. I’m running SL on the MBP laptop 15 with 4 gigs. The two Mac Pros at the studio are running Leopard with 8 gigs and 8 cores. All have FCS 3. The upgrade to FCS has been worth the price. Lots of little oddities gone and nice little things added. My only complaint is that STP is less stable and seems to have a memory leak or something. For some reason, apparently SL, everything on the laptop seems to run better and faster and STP is a lot more stable there too.

Probably Compressor is trying to re-take unfinished jobs.
Try cleaning the “History Window”.

that’s a really good point.
You should trash the compressor preferences. They down deep in the system. I had to do it last week. If you google it you’ll find it easily enough. It does blow off all your custom presets so you save them elsewhere. I did that and did a permissions fix on that machine and it went back to behaving well.Non-linear: all the time and nothing but.

open Compressor – go to compressor main sub menu top left. Reset background processing.
That hopefully should do it.
