I agree with that in principle but the project requires fast turnaround so a transcode isn’t practical.
…and I know it would be better to just have one codec to be working with but I’m trying to figure out a plan should there be two.

Hi Rafael,
Thanks for the response. I chose ‘export to AVI’ from the file menu. In the subsequent dialogue box it offers me a ‘compression’ dropdown from which I chose H.264. Is this incorrect? I have to assume that it’s for use on windows

I was under the impression that Apple recommend NOT doing a clean install of Snow Leopard and doing an upgrade instead (haven’t been brave enough to take the plunge yet though!)

PAL/NTSC only exist in the SD world, you’re in HD so it becomes irrelevant.
What is important (as Rafael mentions) is the timebase – in your case 25fps, and frame size (1080). You can use an easy setup or just drop your first clip into a sequence and click OK when FCP tells you it’s best for the sequence settings to be the same as the clip settings.

I think you’re going to have to do this via sequences.
You can capture the video to a separate file but the audio will come in as 4 channels on a single quicktime.
I’d drop the 4 channel clip into a sequence, duplicate it 3 times (to make 4) then delete the 3 unwanted channels per sequence and batch export them.
Best I can suggest I’m afraid.

So are you trying to achieve a quicktime containing 1 video track plus one audio track per language? i.e. 4 QTs
or are you trying to get one quicktime containing just a video track with no audio and four individual quicktimes each containing one audio track? i.e 5 QTs

Hi Johan,
It’s been a long time since I tried to separate Audio and Video on capture as I found that a single AV quicktime file was more reliable but I think even that would leave you with one video file and one audio file containing your four tracks.
What you could do is create a sequence for each of your languages, drop the clip in then select all the sequences in the browser and batch export them right from within FCP.

Hi Jonathan,
I was quoted around £600.
Hope that helps,

Hi Jonathan,
bad news I’m afraid (or good news if you’re looking to justify a new laptop!). I took it to an apple reseller who investigated the problem and said that it was most likely the graphics card which is part of the logic board and so that would need replacing – not worth it in my opinion so I’ve bought a refurb macbook pro from the apple store.
Cheers

I don’t think I was making myself clear. Both are older models with the express card slot and at 2.4 and 2.5 ghz the processors should be up to the job (certainly maxed out with ram). I suppose the question is: which is better, the 8600 graphics card with more ram are the 9600 with less? And is the motherboard design of the 1st gen unibody MBP superior making it a smarter buy despite the lower speed processor? Then it’s just a case of whether I can put up with a glossy screen.
