    Hi,

I’ve been asked to make an AVI from a 16min sequence that I’ve cut in Final Cut. The client wants as high quality as possible.

I’ve exported a reference movie (DV-PAL), it’s anamorphic so I’ve changed the properties in QT to 1024×576.

Looks like the options in Compressor are limited so I’m going to use Streamclip and could use some suggestions for settings. I’m going to set it to H264 video and keep the frame size the same and deinterlace. What sort of quality setting would you suggest? (It’s going to be burned as a file onto a DVD Rom) and should I be using AAC audio compression – if not what should I use?

    Thanks all,
    Rob

    Hi Rob,
First i couldn’t understand your post. You start talking about AVI, then you talk about H264.
I think that the interface in MPGStreamclip had miss leaded you.
The codecs that you can export with in AVI are not the long list that you see.
That is the list of the QT supported codecs.
The list of the codec supported by AVI is much shorter.
Open the window to export AVI in QT and have a look.
    Cheers,

    Hi Rafael,

Thanks for the response. I chose ‘export to AVI’ from the file menu. In the subsequent dialogue box it offers me a ‘compression’ dropdown from which I chose H.264. Is this incorrect? I have to assume that it’s for use on windows

    Hi Rob,
This have been a discovering for my self.
I think I’ve exported to AVI 3 or 4 times in my life.
I thought that the only codecs supported by AVI in QT were the few DV flavors and NONE listed in QT.
Good to know that AVI support all those codecs.
About the setting for the H264, I have no idea of the requirements of a film for a DVD-ROM. Thinking that would allow similar data rate than a DVD, I guess you can safely rise till 9 Mbps, or even more. This with room for a high data rate AC3.
    Cheers,
    rafael
