    Hi,

I wonder if anyone’s come across this fault which for the time being has killed my Macbook Pro. I’m so busy at the moment I don’t have the time to take it into an apple store to get it looked at so I’m canvassing for opinion here.

It’s a Core duo 1.83 from 2006 with an ATI mobility Radeon X1600.

It was working fine then developed a column of broken horizontal lines to the right of the mouse pointer and over the dock icons. Following a couple of restarts all I get now is the grey startup screen followed by a pale blue screen with the mouse pointer and column of lines as described above.

I’ve tried zapping PRAM with no effect and have run the apple hardware test which tells me that everything is fine. I’ve tried to reinstall from the restore disks and still have the problem.

    Can anybody help?

    Thanks,
    Rob

    Hi Rob,

Unfortunately its a common problem with this model. My MBP, with the same graphics card, started getting the same screen artifacts – a few at first and they gradually got larger and occurred more often. I had Applecare on it and they replaced the motherboard (along with the entire screen and superdrive without me even mentioning anything was wrong with them. Googling ‘macbook pro screen artifacts’ comes up with a lot of instance of this problem. For me it occurred more when the cpu was under a lot of load and the fans started going.

So the computer is boot up with the install CD? Have you tried to install the OS on an External HD and see if it boots.

There is an exchange program for MBP with the “NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT”.
Apple replace the Mother Board of certain computers even the warranty is over.

    https://www.apple.com/support/exchange_repair/macbookpro.html

But I’m afraid this is not of any help for Rob.

Well cloned the HD to an external and tried to boot from there with no luck and also tried to boot from my macpro in target mode, again no luck.

Beginning to sound like it’s terminal…

    Hello Rob,

Would you please tell me how your macbook pro problem ended?
Since yesterday, it seems that I have the same problem that the one you described. (my mbp is also from 2006, with Ati Mobility Radeon X1600):
A column of broken horizontal lines to the right of the mouse pointer and no way to start it (“a pale blue screen with the mouse pointer and column of lines”)…. except with extensions unactivated.
A new installation of Os X from the installation disk didn’t change the problem.

Thank you to inform me how your problem ended, if there is still hope or something.

    Thank you Rob,

    Jonathan

    Hi Jonathan,

bad news I’m afraid (or good news if you’re looking to justify a new laptop!). I took it to an apple reseller who investigated the problem and said that it was most likely the graphics card which is part of the logic board and so that would need replacing – not worth it in my opinion so I’ve bought a refurb macbook pro from the apple store.

    Cheers

    Ouch, bad news indeed 🙁
Thank you very much for your quick answer though!

Do you know the cost of the graphics card and logic board replacement ?

    thank you Rob.

    Cheers,

    Jonathan

    Hi Jonathan,

    I was quoted around £600.

    Hope that helps,
    Rob
