I should follow up and report the replacement VTR my client used today as the AJ-SD98P with the SDI and analog/422 cards installed. It was the more direct route into their Adrenaline than any help I could have provided.

I don’t mean to take this thread off track, but how many external SATA drives can be mounted with the card you mention?

Is it multi-channel eSATA friendly with 4/5 HD eSATA enclosures?

Yes, the client has thought about the board upgrades. I’m not sure if they are going to get upgrades or trade the player in on a different unit.

The player was controlled very nicely by FCP as well as an AVID Adrenaline. Although the AVID can not bring in FW source material, just like the AJA IO hardware limitation.

I was trying to help them out by grabbing some source material with FCP, that they could import with the AVID. Since I could not get it looking good via FW, they went ahead and rented the alternate DVC50 player today.

May I 2nd your suggestion.

Although iDVD is a nice way to put together quick, little (1) clip titles for client reviews, DVD SP does such a better job in every way.

I could not get an alias free iDVD title when trying to use iDVD 5/6 for banging out quickies for client reviews. DVD SP is producing superior results, and it’s internal encoder so far looks as good as compressor at CBR.

I plan to put together a bunch of quickie templates in DVD SP, ie, (single button – single movie) where I can drop in various moving backgrounds and be off an running very quickly.

If I may also comment on importing iDVD projects into DVD SP… It’s doesn’t so far. We all know iDVD 5/6 projects are not supported. However, I tried making and importing an iDVD 4 project, and it doesn’t work either. The structure came in, but the template was not supported. Oh well, it was worth a try. 🙂

I’m probably doing something wrong with iDVD, not being able to to produce alias free end results.

Hi Chris…

This particular player only have FW and composite video output (intended for the monitor.).

WE have decided to rent a different player which has component and SDI output options.

However, I would like to know if there is a way to connect via FW and get equal or superior results to letting the player do the DV conversion.

I was thinking it is simply a matter of frame scaling because of the 720×480 (853×480) source format. However, maybe DV over FW just never looks as good as taking even a s-video feed from a DV player/camera.

If I may, the aliasing issues is very similar to choosing which codec you use when making a DVD in DVD SP. I found many codec formats resulted in a DVD with problems, while either the Apple Intermediate Codec or Avid DV codec looked excellent. I haven’t had to to revisit the issue to see what other quicktime codecs worked, but it’s something I hope to do shortly.

I was hoping DV capture within FCP also had a “magic” configuration which worked. 🙁

May I add that I don’t need to maintain timeline contact in my in/out process at the moment. For now, I can run wild of my clients AVID edit session.

In the short term, my concern is mostly FILE -> FILE -> FILE interchange between the steps I mentioned.

I’m wondering Apple Intermediate Codec since it renders so quickly on my end.

At some point, I will have to do some trial/error testing. I’ll rendered out test files with various codecs on my client’s AVID and I’ll work thru them and end up with test files I’ll import back into his rig. I’ll then observe any quality differences as well as any luminance or aspect ratio errors. I was always going to have to do this anyway, but I would still like to get past those list of test which were destined to be a problem from the beginning… know what I mean? 🙂

Jeremy… My typical AVID work flow would be After Effects for a client with an AVID Adrenaline, soon to be upgraded to the Adrenaline HD.

Often I will simply work in AE and render files in the AVID codec. Sometimes I will need to use FCP to complete some editing along with the motion graphics and provide a digital file for the client. I am trying to understand the best codec flow to use for AVID -> AE -> FCP -> AVID.

Ideally, I would like to avoid any additional transcoding, as well as choose a starting codec which allows the client to output a movie files as quickly as possible. I believe the inherent AVID 1:1 would be the fastest for them to render and import. I’m trying to get a handle on what the client can do a little differently on output/input, that will make using FCP a little easier. If I can’t find a solution which maintains quality thru my process, as well as keeping client output/input times to a minimum, I may end up having to add Express HD to my software list. I’d rather not have to invest that $$$.

The questions I have regarding luminance ranges, etc, is with regard to how things can get remapped as you move from one codec to another. I know after a period of time I could discover the best methods/settings to use at each step in the in/out chain. However, I would like to do a little reading and get a leg up on matter. Certainly, I will post specific follow up questions to the FCP forum as well as the AE and AVID forums if that is the best way to go.

I’m sure I am missing part of the bigger picture with questions.

I was able to reinstall from the FCPro crossgrade discs to v5.1. I will not download the 5.1.1 updates until I get past some current projects.

So far 5.1 is rolling along nicely.

An update to an error in a previous post. The crossgrade did not update my FCPro and FCPro HD software on other volumes. Whew!

My observation was a simple mistake of the APPLICATIONS icon in the sidebar always referencing the current and upgraded BOOT volume. When I looked in the actual applications folder on the clone volumes, my original FCPro stuff was all there. (red face)

I’m in middle of reinstalling the crossgrade from the master discs after removing all bits/pieces of the studio package.

I hope to post a positive outcome shortly.
