  • Panny DVCPro50 digitizing issues…

Posted by Rj Miles on October 3, 2006 at 4:10 am

    Greetings everyone…

I am trying to interface with a Panasonic DVCPro 50 deck, model AJ-SD93P. It’s a bare bones setup with only the 6pin FW output, RCA stereo audio and a BNC composite connection.

    https://www.panasonic.ca/English/Broadcast/broadcast/dvcpro50/aj_sd93.asp

NO matter what capture setup I try, I end up with digitized clips with tons of aliasing. I have tried a number of variations from the DVC50 NTSC 48hz FCPro setup.

The original footage was shot with the Panny camera set to 24p and anamorphic. QT is reporting the captured clips as 720 x 480 (853×480).

I have tried setting tha capture frame size at 853×480, but it still comes out 720×480 (853×480).

Anyway… what is the proper capture set up for digitizing DVCPro 50 thru FW to eliminate all aliasing in the captured clip?

I am trying to help a client who has heretofore bumped his DVCPro tapes to BetaSP via a Panny player with analog component out feature, which produces wonderful results.

    Thanks

Why not bring it in Component uncompressed? Straight from the Panasonic

    Hi Chris…

This particular player only have FW and composite video output (intended for the monitor.).

WE have decided to rent a different player which has component and SDI output options.

However, I would like to know if there is a way to connect via FW and get equal or superior results to letting the player do the DV conversion.

I was thinking it is simply a matter of frame scaling because of the 720×480 (853×480) source format. However, maybe DV over FW just never looks as good as taking even a s-video feed from a DV player/camera.

If I may, the aliasing issues is very similar to choosing which codec you use when making a DVD in DVD SP. I found many codec formats resulted in a DVD with problems, while either the Apple Intermediate Codec or Avid DV codec looked excellent. I haven’t had to to revisit the issue to see what other quicktime codecs worked, but it’s something I hope to do shortly.

I was hoping DV capture within FCP also had a “magic” configuration which worked. 🙁

    Thanks again for your post.

[RJ] “WE have decided to rent a different player which has component and SDI output options.”

I know about budget, BUT have you considered purchasing the add-on boards for that machine. Panasonic lists them at $1500 for the analog component board and $2000 for the SDI option. Personally, I’d bite the bullet for the SDI option board and let your project pay for the cost of the board.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

Yes, the client has thought about the board upgrades. I’m not sure if they are going to get upgrades or trade the player in on a different unit.

The player was controlled very nicely by FCP as well as an AVID Adrenaline. Although the AVID can not bring in FW source material, just like the AJA IO hardware limitation.

I was trying to help them out by grabbing some source material with FCP, that they could import with the AVID. Since I could not get it looking good via FW, they went ahead and rented the alternate DVC50 player today.

    RJ,
You realize that Quicktime player will default to “Low Quality” playback for D50 movies? You need to set checkbox to “High Quality” to see full rez in the player. Look it up in QT player help. Sorry if you knew that.

    Bingo…

Thanks Tom. That did the trick on ALL of the DVC50 test clips I grabbed in the DVC50 codec setting. Thanks

I should follow up and report the replacement VTR my client used today as the AJ-SD98P with the SDI and analog/422 cards installed. It was the more direct route into their Adrenaline than any help I could have provided.
