FCPro 5.1.1 crashing
Posted by Rj Miles on September 18, 2006 at 6:30 amAnyone else having trouble since upgrading to FCPro 5.1.1?
I just installed the crossgrade and have not been able to get 5.1.1 to work. I can launch the app but I quickly get a spinning icon, especially if I move to the desktop with the app open.
One thing I did not notice, the cross grade install searched out all of my clone backup versions and converted them to 5.1.1. 🙁 I didn’t know that could happen automatically. I’ll have to start leaving my cloned boot volumes offline during any future APPLE software upgrades.

September 18, 2006 at 3:03 pmLet’s back up a minute. You installed 5.1. Did you open FCP first before doing the upgrade to 5.1.1? Did you tell the installer to install on your boot disk and not your clone drive? How do you know your clone drives are now 5.1.1?

No, I don’t think 5.1.1 has issues — at least there haven’t been many complaints here. You probably need to Fix Permissions on your system drive. After that, if things aren’t better you should try to reinstall the update and fix the permissions again right after before running the updated software. If it won’t let you then you migt need to uninstall FCP (and possibly the OS) from the ground up.

September 18, 2006 at 11:28 pmI was able to run FCPro HD 4.5 and PCPro 5.04 before the install. I did not try running the version of FCPro on the crossgrade discs, I went immediately to the online upgrade. I didn’t even consider this might be a mistake.
After the 5.1.1 install, FCPro HD was removed from the applications folder on my primary boot volume. FCPro HD was also removed from woth a 10.4.7 and 10.3.9 clone boot volumes, and their FCPro apps were changed to 5.1.1.
I only slected the primary OSX boot vloume when I ran the installation. Perhaps I looked to briefly at a prompt which said it was going to do ALL of the FCPro apps it could find, but I did not notice…but maybe I missed.
I will try reinstalling FCPro from the crossgrade discs and running. If it works, I will try the ionline 5.1.1 upgrade and see what happens.
Are there any special deletion tips for starting with a fresh FCPro? I know I will find/delete the preference file, and toss the app. Please advise if there are any other goodies I should also toss.
Thanks
RJ

September 19, 2006 at 12:02 amNo doubt about it, bypassing the 5.1 update was the error. If you install from the crossgarde disks and then update to 5.1.1 you will be okay.

September 19, 2006 at 7:07 pmAn update to an error in a previous post. The crossgrade did not update my FCPro and FCPro HD software on other volumes. Whew!
My observation was a simple mistake of the APPLICATIONS icon in the sidebar always referencing the current and upgraded BOOT volume. When I looked in the actual applications folder on the clone volumes, my original FCPro stuff was all there. (red face)
I’m in middle of reinstalling the crossgrade from the master discs after removing all bits/pieces of the studio package.
I hope to post a positive outcome shortly.

September 22, 2006 at 3:12 amI was able to reinstall from the FCPro crossgrade discs to v5.1. I will not download the 5.1.1 updates until I get past some current projects.
So far 5.1 is rolling along nicely.
Thanks for the suggestions.
