I’m never sure whether to feel good or bad whenever I find the answer to my own question. Apparently, at least for me, the Cow Forums work much like things did in my old television station days. When a piece of equipment would malfunction I would call on the help of an engineer. When the engineer would arrive the equipment would mysteriously fix itself before the engineer did anything.
So I make this post and then continue my search for answers. Apparently what I’ve been looking for is called, appropriately enough, a “Page Jump”. It appears to be relatively simple. I’m still open to input if anyone wants to add any advice.

Tom thanks so much for taking the time to point me in the right direction. In retrospect, it seems obvious that I should have known to compare the two item properties. Although both the clips and the sequence were 720p60, the clips were shot at 24p and the sequence was set to 60p.
Again I appreciate your help. Having read many of your posts on this and other Forums, I can truthfully say that this is not the first time I’ve benefited from your wisdom. Although just once it would be nice if the source of one of my problems turned out NOT to be operator error. When I finally get around to upgrading to FCPv6, I’ll do myself a favor and order your Complete Training DVD.

Ahh Haa! Got it. “Audio/Video” Setting Preference is correct…but you change the setting in the “Summary” tab…not the “Device Control” tab

Thanks for taking the time to post a reply to my question. I’ll investigate my client’s Media100 setup more thoroughly. And, for what it’s worth, I agree with you that “FCP is not the solution to all problems in the video editing world”. Thanks again.

Hhhmmm? Would you care to hazzard a guess as to where I may have erred in creating my master? As I mentioned, the post house could read the code without problem but the audio studio saw no code, expect right at the very beginning of the tape. I have been laying down bars, tone, slate and the spot in one pass as an insert edit. Could I be doing something that is erasing the TC or control track as I carry out the inseert edit? I usually start blacking a tape with the code 00:58:50:00 and then insert bars at 00:59:00:00.

Thanks folks I’ll take that approach and run a test tape by the audio studio that I originally had the problem with. I suspect, given both of your confident recommendations, that I won’t have a repeat of my previous TC problem. I’m not sure I understand why FCP includes the “black and code” option if it doesn’t work but, perhaps, it works on some different type of video deck. In any case, I am so very grateful for the nonjudgemental help and advice that I’ve received from the Cow and the members of our small community.

Again, thanks for the responses. It seems I’ve much to learn abou this brave new digital world in which we live. I’ll ask a few questions of the client and, in all probablity, will end up turning this one over to a qualified post house to complete.

Thanks for the response Eric. I checked with a couple of post houses here in town and they haven’t encountered a DVD request before either but I guess if the client wants DVD that’s what they’ll get.

I bought a device a few years ago called the ShotWatcher. It is an FM transmitter that you attach to the camera via tape, velcro, rubberbands, whatever. You run the video out of the camera into the ShotWatcher and it transmitts a signal that can be picked up on a consumer grade, battery opperated, hand held television set. My set is made by Casio. The ShotWatcher has a limited range, 50 to 100 feet on a good day, but it will enable you to see what the camera operator is shooting. Mine was made by Vortex Media. Don’t know if they still carry that product but it sounds like it will give you what you need. I use it all the time. Producers carry the portable set around and most seem to appreciate the extra level of confidence. Of course, from an operators standpoint, then you run into Producers telling you what to shoot and how to shoot it…but that’s another topic.

Luke thanks for the shout back. I’m a bit nervous about sweeping upgrades right in the middle of a project. I’ll start with the v4.8.1 driver and see if that won’t get me through this current edit. Then I guess it will be time for me to make an OS change and an update from FCP 4.5. I’m starting to realize that along with death and taxes we might as well add software upgrades, they seem certain. Thanks again.
