Thank you, I’ll go to the Blackmagic site and seek it out. Do you know if there are any known issues pertaining to that driver and AE 7?

Thanks. Currently Motion Blur is off. I tried it with MB on but even at a 180 degree shutter angle the text was too fuzy to read, although it did camouflage the double-letter issue I’m having.

As soon as I get back in the edit suite I’ll check the “Decklink Settings”. In all honesty, that is something I’ve never done and am not sure how to go about it but it’s probably time I learned. Thanks again.

Mark thanks for the input. Pretty straight forward stuff I’m doing. No 3D, no light. I am rendering out for FCP, lower field first. Although I’ve experimented with all 3 options; off-upper and lower.

I’ve been struggling for some time now with traveling type/text horizontally and have been getting pretty poor results. I’ve done a lot of reading and much research on the subject with no positive results. One area I haven’t fully explored is the way I’m outputting to my NTSC monitor from the Blackmagic card I’m using. Perhaps there’s something in my hardware set-up that I’m missing. Again, thanks for the response.

Thanks, that’s the sort of feedback I was interested in. I know that DBeta is a good format, pretty much the standard for most shops today and certainly almost all of my projects eventually end up onto DigiBeta. But I also know that HD is coming up fast and there seems to be no question that it’s the next big thing.

I know it’s an educated guessing game but I’m just not sure how long DBeta is going to remain in its dominate position. And for a guy like me, who doesn’t make his primary income from editing, that machine is not going to pay for itself in one year.

Maybe I need to be thinking about investing in the future and not what is soon to be the past. Even if, for me, the future is a lower end HD system. At least that way I can begin learning the ins and outs of the HD format.

    Thanks again for the input.

debe thanks for the quick response. That isn’t exactly my problem. The columns for “Shot” and “Scene/Take” are showing up in the Browser window there’s just no information in the columns.

  • Thank you so much for responding with your helpful suggestions. It’s great to have a forum where other professionals remember what it’s like to be climbing the learning curve of new equipment and take the time to pass on some of their knowledge without bending to the temptation to be judgemental, to make unfounded assumptions or to crack wise at another’s expense.

I’ve been in this stimulating business for over 35 years and have traveled the road from the Zoomar lens, past the SqueezeZoom and the self-orienting eyepiece and on into the world of HD. Thousands of pages of manuals, hundreds of conversations with Engineers and Production personnel, ever-changing specs and capabilities and, almost without exception, the people I’ve encountered along the way have been willing and eager to lend a hand in the spirit of just being nice.

This international world of electronic forums has given me undreamed of opportunities to converse with so many talented people and more than a few seem to visit here at the COW. Thank you for your help. I’m out of town and away from my edit system but I’ll put your suggestions into action as soon as I return.

Well that was some very cool stuff indeed. I don’t know where people get all that creativity. I’ve always admired those who break free of the confines of commercial work and spread their creative wings. I’m not sure whether that requires a certain type of client or just requires the ability to sell a client on a vision that you have. I’ll have to study those videos a while to see what I can learn. Thanks for taking the time to show those two peices of work. It certainly gave me some food for thought with respect to the project on which I’m working.

Shane thanks again for taking the time to help me out. From previous posts on this forum I gathered that 8bit took up more hard drive space than DV so I guess I assumed that, if for no other reason, 8bit was a higher quality compression. My project actually will include a lot of text and a few 2d graphics. I’ll take a look at the quality of those and see what I think when I get to that stage.

As for your stock answers, what a trip! I actually came across those a while back when trying to find out what was going on with my “edit to tape” problem. And #18 did indeed help me work around the error message. I still thought that I was doing something wrong though, even when all I was trying to do was lay down bars and tone. I’m okay with the problem being a bug, it makes me feel a little better about myself.

You’re a nice guy to have taken the time to put up those answers on the Apple discussion board. When first I discovered them I read through the list and it difinately helped me out. I still have a long way to go. This FCP system is no where near as easy to learn and use as the Media 100 system I migrated from … but then, it’s no where near as simple and limiting either. Onward and upward!

Thanks for the response. Yes the 1800 has a Firewire 400 connection which I’ve hooked to the G5. It works fine. But when I finish the offline won’t I want to recapture the selects at 8bit uncommpressed? Isn’t 8bit a better quality than the DV, or am I mistaken?

And if I do want to recapture at 8bit do I run into some kind of FCP compatibility problem trying to replace DV footage with 8bit? Sequence settings? Project settings? As you no doubt can tell I’m very confused by the various capture vs. sequence settings.

When mastering to tape I’ve been getting an error message suggesting that I “may have attempted to output a clip with compression settings that do not match the current output settings.” I’ve even gotten this message when only trying to lay down bars to tape. And I still haven’t figured out what’s going on. I just didn’t want to set myself up for aggravating times down the road.

Flip thanks again. I’ve posted a test which accurately shows my problem here: https://www.mindspring.com/~bfoot/test.mov
MrMike I think we’ve got two different problems here…but what do I know?
