August 4, 2014 at 5:29 pm in reply to: Commercial Bid itemization- How much detail to give

We created a Pages (Excel) doc that has a complete breakdown of all services needed on a bunch of pages….within those lists there are summaries of pre-pro, production, post and even a production fee which is a markup. At the top is a summary page of the scope of the project, then a second page that pulls in the numbers off the detail pages into a nice summary. If they ask why post is so expensive we can provide the breakdown of hours for editing and graphics.

Has been working great. Then, when we invoice we added a column which are the actuals in time and costs so we can track how we did in the original estimate. Very valuable!

With Extreme Reach you send them one file and they get the spot to the station regardless of where they are located.

Only Charter here wants the exact 900 frames….all other stations require a 5 second slate, 2 black, spot then at least one full frame of black at the end, most will take 2 seconds at the end.

They run them thru the FlipFactory and extract and encode the spot to their server settings.

What was the file extension on each encode? We sometimes deliver a file with .mp4 and copy the file and change the extension to .mov. One is great for Quicktime users and the other works on Windows and Android etc.

But it’s the same file….just a different extension.

July 28, 2014 at 10:07 pm in reply to: Small size animation/film for an application

Most important thing here will be frame size and frame rate. We use 15fps and small frame sizes like 640 x 360 or 832 x 468 since most people look at these on their phones….do a test!

We also use animated GIF sequences which work well on very short things….

  • I’ll go back to my original suggestion and try 1400kbps at 960 x 540 and see how that looks, from a size/quality trade off.

July 15, 2014 at 9:09 pm in reply to: Where to post….Mac Network question

Seems this issue goes back to 2013 and early Mavericks installs and continues into July of 2014! We just installed Mavericks on another MacPro and we now both have the same issue, whether we are looking at each other or at a Mountain Lion MacPro.

    Humphffffff!

July 12, 2014 at 5:20 pm in reply to: Bad buffering! Bad!

I am not such a stickler for the largest frame size. Try encoding a 960 x 540 frame at a lower bitrate and see how that works even full screen. And then try an 832 x 468 and see how that holds up. I am always impressed how I can make an 832 x 468 movie and it looks fantastic on iPhones and iPads etc, and even holds up on a 1920 x 1080 monitor with a great user experience.

I am more about the experience (which is what you have here….the buffering issue) rather than strictly making a large frame size.

July 11, 2014 at 2:11 am in reply to: Destructive edits

Doesn’t the term destructive edit come from the film days when an actual slice was cut from the negative, thereby destroying the original linear piece of film? So it carried forward into the AVID which used a lot of film nomenclature and here we are.
