First, when you say 3230 x 240 QT movies, what codec are the quicktime movies now? Feeding the highest quality source file to the encoder will result in the best result. Are your QT movies interlaced, or did they originate from interlaced sources (videotape)? What frame rate are the QT movies and what frame rate are you using for the FLVs? What bitrate settings are you using?

Give us an idea of the skill level you are talking about. And what market?
A grad student with 10 hours on FCP with a small student reel might start at about $34,000. A 2-3 year editor with a decent reel and a couple good references might get in the door for about $45000 (depends on market…I’m talking small to mid midwest market). Whereas a really good top editor in their market that can swap cuts with the best of ’em could ask $120,000. At that level, they might just start their own company and ask whatever they want!

I just got the Epson 4490 with a $50 rebate it was $188. It is a letter size scanner but it does a better job than my older Epson Photo 2450 that bit the dust (more than 4 years old). I can scan everything you listed. BTW,my 2450 had a firewire interface and the 4490 is only USB, but I found no speed decrease with the USB. It takes about $50 off the price of the firewire version.
I just scanned a 35mm negative and it also surpassed the 2450’s quality.

Honestly, Ben, you are saying that compressor 2 is better overall than Bitvice or Main Concept for MPEG-2 encoding for DVDs? I know most compressor users have gone to a straight CBR encoding because Compressor had a problem with spiking in VBR encodes and I have seen them where a spike would choke a player. If an encoder can’t do VBR then it should be disqualified.
Compressor 2 does add quite a bit….but for just MPEG-2 FOR DVDs is Compressor still your best choice overall?

How about the horizontal blur dissolve?
I just cut four 4-minute pieces for Harley-Davidson and in the review the client saw a dissolve and asked why I put it there. I said it was a camera move up into racked lights and worked nice going back to a low angle interview clip (camera looking up). I asked why he didn’t like it. He said he had just watched about 10 minutes of video and there wasn’t a single dissolve, so why put one in there now?

Yes, it is captured media…I cannot use the preview audio with two layers having the compressor…the dissolve has to be rendered and I need the dissolve to fix a sound edit.
