If the client requires the 3.5 datarate, why go higher? We have found that above 4kb/sec and yoiu can experience choking…on older PCs it was around 2.5 kb/sec.
Cleaner has always made MPEG-1 with the correct datarate so I am not sure of your exact settings etc.

Ahem…er, Walter, I wasn’t offering information…I was asking the question if the 24P format wasn’t compatible over firewire. Gary answered it in an earlier post.
Sorry to tie up bandwidth, but I was feeling blamed for offering information when I was in fact trying to help troubleshoot by posing a question, which Gary answered.

Absolutely guaranteed you will make better WMV encodes with Windows Media Encoder or sorenson Squeeze on the PC. Just seems to handle scaling better…much better. But as you found out….if Flip4Mac doesn’t have to scale up much it can get passable results.

Wow…it’s not going to look better than VHS footage. No way to track down the original source tapes? If you have Cleaner you can try various codecs and settings to get a decent uprez…not gonna be easy.

Snce you are not using the HD SDI output of the dec to capture through a card, you might be limited by using Firewire as your input. It is possible that the 24P format is not compatible via firewire. Can you monitor the deck and be sure that the video is even coming out of the super out?

With all the delays on affordable and accessible HD disk authoring programs and burners it seems that for shows or installations that will be projected or played on plasmas on kiosks, Windows Media with some kind of menu driven interface would work pretty effectively. It doesn’t give you a distribution method, really, but you could package up the files and burn them onto a standard DVD.
I have a CD Menu authoring program that I use to create pretty simple titles and I think that would work pretty good. Since several video cards support the resolution needed, I believe a Windows Media solution with a simple interactive menu would suffice while we wait for the holy grail of laser based disc authoring.

Hmmm….this is an interesting one. Only because I am wondering because of the delivery, that he can upload the clips 640 x 480. Which codec?
Otherwise I would opt for DVCPro50 as the codec and let the compressor do the scaling. I also like to crop the image….I use 16 pixels right and left and 12 pixels top and bottom.

IF YOU HAVe an older version of cleaner laying around upgrade to 6.5 then download the 6.5.1 patch and you’ll be all set. Use it all the time and it has all the flexibility of cleaner with the On2 codec.

I believe MpegStreamclip (squared5.com) can mux together the two files that the encoder creates. Everyone should have this little app in their toolbox!

I would look at a color correct….I would do it in After Effects and matte out the horses and try to get their whites down a bit. Kind of looks like a luma issue…not sure exactly why compressor is fattening up the black line.
