    Got the answer.

Make sure the RS422 switch (menu 35.2) is in “Local Only” on both KiPros.

Don’t know if any of you are still checking this thread.

I’m going to throw in my 2 pennies and mention the Black Magic Design Hyperdeck. It does a pretty fair job with MXF files (recording and playing back). However, there is still no Psf playback capability so laying off to tape for archiving is cumbersome with needing to convert. Also, I’ve been having a lot of problems with their Pro model identifying timecodes properly. They just shipped me a replacement on an RMA and it is even worse than the first one.

We went with them because we liked the idea of non-proprietary drives.

I’ve been looking at KiPro Rack but I’m curious to know if anyone has any experience with both units. I’d like to get a fair comparison so I can avoid jumping out of the frying pan into the fire.

    Thanks, Justin.

I’m still testing and will try that.

    Finding a minor problem here.

Has anyone else noticed when using Hyperdeck, it will only playback in 23.98p, even if it is recording 23.98psf?

As a result, tape decks don’t want to have anything to do with playback from it.

    Or am I missing something?

For the projects finished in house, yes, we have no problem running them out through a Kona 3/VTR Exchange or the Avid Hardware.

However occasionally we will act as a service bureau. Folks will bring drives prepared out of house and ask us to output their projects to tape. I want to give them the most expedient directions as to how to export to the drive so we can transfer to an SSD and pop it into the Hyperdeck and the Sony deck be able to see it (thereby saving much time for them and us).

  • This unit’s layout has my vote, too!

More problematic will be the issue of Assemble and Insert edits… but there has to be a way.

If BlackMagic wants the Studio to truly catch on as the “Tape Deck of the Future,” it will need these mods.

After a rocky beginning, we’re starting to find more and more uses for it.

  • Okay, it’s working now for us. Many thanks for the updated software.

    So DNXHD 220x is a 59.94 codec.

Any news as to when DNXHD 175x will be accommodated?

  • Everything we record is .mov so I guess the Hyperdeck Studio is reverting back to uncompressed QT everytime I set it to DNXHD even though the Utility is set at DNXHD.

Guess we’re waiting for the release version now, too.

Just out of curiosity, what resolution of DNXHD does it default to? Since I haven’t gotten the machine to do it, I can’t tell.

We have one unit and it does work with a JLCooper ES450SP controller.

Have been busy with other activities and haven’t gotten back to the reference problem which is our most serious issue with the Hyperdeck Studio at the moment.

Once we wrap up a bunch of projects and things slow down for the holidays, I expect to have time to run it through some tests BMD has suggested.

It turns out the original unit shipped to us was faulty.

I now have a unit that does (almost) everything it is supposed to do.

I’m still having significant issues with external reference.

Regarding Scott’s concern over using files, I haven’t tried to playback files created in FCP through the Hyperdeck Studio.

However, I was told I needed to download their Desktop Video software to accomplish importing of files into FCP. Once I did that and used the BMD settings that subsequently appeared in audio/video settings, I was successful.

That information is nowhere to be found in the “manual.” It also doesn’t appear in the Hyperdeck downloads screen. I had to go through my litany of problems with BMD tech support and be told to download it from the Decklink section – go figure.

I’m guessing it will work in reverse. Let us know your progress.
