Thanks. I’m OK with the prices. I just want to get the best performing memory config. Also I’m recently aware that FCP only uses 6GB of RAM?!? Can that be correct?

Check your capture settings and be sure VIDEO is checked.

As a workaround you might just record the UMATIC footage on the DVCAM and capture from there. You will be a generation down – but it is UMATIC after all. And how did you find a working UMATIC deck? I thought all those were being used for an artificial reef somewhere.

Is it possible that the tapes were subjected to high strength magnetic fields? X-ray, gamma rays? Were they in a medical environment?

You are so right! Small text moving slowly can also be problematic with this method. I just sort of assume that everyone will be viewing this on an external monitor.

February 12, 2010 at 1:42 am in reply to: MacBook Firewire ports inconsistent -worry or not?

I wanted to be sure that I protected the integrity of my firewire ports so I do a few things to do that. Pushing cables in and out repeatedly can shorten the life of the firewire port. I use a powered firewire hub as well. Use short cables. I found a place in California that had a bunch of 18 inch cables that were very affordable. And now every thing works fine, the stars are aligned with the fabric of the universe.

One way of doing a rock steady credit roll is to create your credit roll in photoshop with sufficient resolution. You ONLY NEED TO MATCH THE HORIZONTAL RESOLUTION. The vertical resolution can be what ever is necessary. Then key it over the background video. Position the beginning of the clip just out of frame on the lower part of the screen. use the motion tab to set a keyframe. Then at the end of the clip position the bottom of the keyed image at the top just out of frame. Set a second keyframe. Watch the result. I understand that FCP7 has a credit roll built in and the resolution problems have been solved. might be worth the $300 to upgrade.

Be sure you do not accidentally have an extra copy of quicktime on your computer. This can happen sometimes when iTunes or quicktime is updated. Also might check for time code inconsistencies between Video and audio. THat would be rare however.

    It is technical but I think the EX1 shoots 1080P not 1920 x 1024.

Perhaps it would make more sense to change the workflow a bit. Have separate timelines for different parts of the program. Those timelines could be linked to specified media contained on specified drives. In the end you can output quicktime files of those timelines and assemble the program from its component parts.

If that doesn’t work for you this is a perfect justification for some sort of shared media server.
