I’ve just read a white paper on managing media in libraries:
    https://images.apple.com/final-cut-pro/docs/Media_Management.pdf
and decided to switch from saving the clips separately on an external media to saving them as managed media. Now things have become clearer; the Original Media folder contains the H.264 files and the Transcoded Media folder contains the Apple ProRes 422.

My original plan was to capture the Panasonic AC8 footage with FCPX and edit the whole project on FCP7, but I guess it’s time to take the plunge and learn the new version. 🙂

Thanks Bret and Andy for the support.

I’m importing the files to an external hard disk. Yes, they are .mov with H.264 codec, definitely not ProRes 422. I can individually convert each file to ProRes 422 with Compressor, though the quality goes down. However the point is that I understand that FCPX can import media as ProRes 422, but for me it doesn’t !

  • Thanks Shane. In the end I’ve decided to import the clips through FCPX, which looks as though it will work okay.

Compressor also now fails when I try importing and compressing a QT movie of the project! This is going from bad to worse….

    Please, any suggestions anyone?

Yes, that works okay, but what I want to do is go directly from FCP into Compressor; something which has worked fine for me up until now. By doing this I will have the best quality. See Michael Sacci’s post:
    https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/1077568
“When you send a video from FCP it actually uncompresses each individual frame to a 4:4:4 frame as sends it from encoding. This is why going from a HDV sequence via Export to Compressor for m2v encode will give you a much better result”

I’m not sure how else I can go from FCP to Compressor without using File/Send to/Compressor.

    The timeline is fully rendered.

    Many thanks! That worked fine.

    Amy,

I’m now having similar problems. Did you find a solution?
I’m trying to import a table of text into FCP6. It starts as an excel sheet. I save it as a pdf and it looks fine. I can zoom right in and looks crystal sharp. If I import that pdf into FCP6 it looks dreadful!
I’ve tried saving it as a jpeg with the “best” setting, and ridiculously high resolutions – 2000 dpi. It looks just as bad as the pdf.

  • Sorry for delay in replying – time difference States/Europe…. Thanks, that worked. I didn’t even realise that Quicktime had export capability. When I began working on the file I went straight to MPEG Streamclip as I had been told that that could cope with anything. Anyway I can now continue working on this project. Many thanks.

  • Still the same I’m afraid. I tried exporting to Quicktime with Apple ProRes 422 compression, but it still hangs up and never advances beyond “Preparing…”
