    FCP 7.0.2
    Compressor 3.5.2

    Hi
I’m trying to make the m2v and ac3 files for a 20 minute video by sending the project directly from FCP to Compressor. After about an hour of compressing, FCP crashes and the compression returns “Failed”. If I export a QT movie and take that into Compressor I don’t have any problems. However I want to skip this step and “send” the project directly from FCP to Compressor.

There have been quite a few posts about problems with Compressor and I have tried their recommendations, but perhaps I have missed something. This is what I have done.
    1. Run Compressor Repair (https://www.digitalrebellion.com/compressor_repair.htm)
    2. Deleted the following files:
    com.apple.Compressor.CompressorSharedService.plist
    com.apple.compressor.Compressor.plist
    com.apple.FinalCutPro.plist
    Final Cut Pro 7.0 Prefs
    Final Cut Pro Prof Cache
    3. Deleted the contents from /var/spool/qmaster/
    4. Repaired the File Permissions with Disc Utility
    5. Restarted the computer
    6. Hit “Reset Background Processing” in Compressor

And I still have the same problem! FCP crashes and the compression fails.

    Any suggestions?

    Don’t use Send to Compressor.

Make sure your timeline is completely rendered.

I’m not sure how else I can go from FCP to Compressor without using File/Send to/Compressor.

    The timeline is fully rendered.

Make a self-contained or ref movie. Export QT Movie from FCP. Open Compressor App. Drag that file into Compressor and choose your preset for ac3 and m2v. For 20 minute video use CBR 6.5.

Yes, that works okay, but what I want to do is go directly from FCP into Compressor; something which has worked fine for me up until now. By doing this I will have the best quality. See Michael Sacci’s post:

“When you send a video from FCP it actually uncompresses each individual frame to a 4:4:4 frame as sends it from encoding. This is why going from a HDV sequence via Export to Compressor for m2v encode will give you a much better result”

I haven’t been able to spot a noticeable visual difference by exporting this way. You are introducing a significant loss of encoding speed for negligible benefit.

Exporting directly to Compressor is slow for two reasons:
    1) Compressor has to request each frame from Final Cut Pro, which is much slower than reading the data directly from a file. This is particularly bad when using Frame Controls or doing multi-pass encoding.

    2) You can’t take advantage of virtual clustering to better utilize your multi-core processor.

But having said that, Send to Compressor should still work. If you click the little “i” icon in Batch Monitor, what does it say about the failed batch?

    My software:
FCS Maintenance Pack – Tools to keep Final Cut Studio running smoothly and fix problems when they arise
FCP Versioner – Backs up Final Cut Pro projects to XML and creates changelists for each revision
    More tools…

Compressor also now fails when I try importing and compressing a QT movie of the project! This is going from bad to worse….

    Please, any suggestions anyone?
