I’m trying to import 39 s of footage shot on an underwater camera, but get the error message: File Error: 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown.

I can play the footage with programs such as Quicktime, VLC, Realtime, and MPEG Streamclip. With the latter, I’ve tried to export it to various formats but each time it hangs. It also hangs when I try to import it into Motion3.

This is what MPEG Streamclip returns for Stream Info:
    Stream: M00-0063.AVI
    Path: /Volumes/HAWKS/MOB/M00-0063.AVI

    Duration: 0:00:39
    Data Size: 52.19 MB
    Bit Rate: 11.09 Mbps

    Video Tracks:
    DivX 5.0, 640 × 480, ~25.004 fps, 10.87 Mbps

    Audio Tracks:
DVI IMA stereo, 32 kHz, 257 kbps

    Stream Files:
    M00-0063.AVI (52.19 MB)

    The curious thing is the frame rate, and sure enough when I step through the video, occasional frames are missing or duplicated (all the frame content is different). e.g. (from the beginning) 00, 06, 08, 09, 09, 11, 12, 12, 14, 15, 15, 16, 18, 18, 19, 21, 21, 22, 23, 24, 00

Can any one suggest how I can fix this?

You might try using Compressor to transcode to ProRes. Make sure Frame Controls are on and all quality choices set to Best.

Still the same I’m afraid. I tried exporting to Quicktime with Apple ProRes 422 compression, but it still hangs up and never advances beyond “Preparing…”

Have you tried exporting from QT? It’s strange the file will play, but not export. What’s the original file’s codec and what kind of media was it recorded to?

FCP will not import or play .avi files. If, however, they are playable in quicktime (via Perian) and you cannot export them, it suggests the file is corrupted or faulty in some way.

Sorry for delay in replying – time difference States/Europe…. Thanks, that worked. I didn’t even realise that Quicktime had export capability. When I began working on the file I went straight to MPEG Streamclip as I had been told that that could cope with anything. Anyway I can now continue working on this project. Many thanks.

FCP will definitely import and play .avi files. I have found though that it does not like files in general above 2.8 gb.
