    For Squeeze,

The best setting for greatest quality/compatability with DVD players is the MPEG2 DVD_PAL-Lg or DVD_NTSC_lg depending on your format.

By audio playback rate, I’m assuming you mean the sample rate. The audio sample rate for DVD is 48KHz.

Depending on your capture source it is usually best to use 48KHz audio throughout if your destination source is DVD.

In most Avid editing applications you set your project to match your source. eg. DV25 – DV Video/48KHz 2-channel audio. You also have the option to automatically up-sample any other imported audio media into your project.

External scopes are always the preferred choice.

From memory the Tools/Video option only appears if you are connected to a Mojo. Sort of makes sense – without a Mojo you’re only outputting to DV unless you have an AJA/Black Magic card etc.

    Restream sounds interesting.

I used to work for ITV but made the move to Australia for a more enjoyable life a couple of years ago. During the last year or two at ITV, the company made a wholesale move to Avid systems – a very good move. The experience did me no harm in quickly securing a job here.

I’ll make some enquiries here about the edit systems and support for AFD signalling and the follow-on stages; MPEG2 and DVD authoring to see if there is a failing in the process.

In Europe the majority of domestic cameras are still 4:3 but the number of 16:9 cameras and flat-screen TVs are increasing rapidly.

For a broadast picture, the broadcaster sends the aspect ratio switch details, which, if detected correctly, switches the TV to the correct aspect ration – assumming that the person watching hasn’t set the TV to manual switch. It’s amazing just how many people watch in the wrong aspect ration and don’t seem to notice!

If you TV/Monitor has the auto-switch enabled it should be able to detect the aspect ratio set. I’m not certain however, which editing/DVD writing applications specifically set the switch from data embedded in the DVD.

I used to use Adobe Encore but since moving to Media Composer I thought I’d give DVDit a try. Seems to work but like Encore it takes some figuring out.

I’ve been having problems with Sorenson Squeeze V4.5. Regardless of whether I use a QT reference or self-contained, the MPEG settings fail to create audio under any of the DVD project types. The QT’s play fine in QuickTime and Windows Media Player. All other codecs work fine.

I’ve been in contact with Sorenson about this and they’re looking at the issue. My current work around is to add the DVD_PAL_lg setting twice to the QT file. Delete the audio setting from one and the video setting from the other. The output is the expected .m2v and.m2a files that seemed to work fine in V4.0.

DVDs are working fine. Source material is DVCam with titles produced at 1:1. Durations 30-45-mins.

The motherboard battery may be dead – is the clock wrong each time you start your PC? If so then the battery needs replacing.

As for that affecting your bins etc, unlikely. More likely is your prefs/user account being corrupt. Try creating a new user and open, edit, save your sequence and see what happens there.

Post back and let the Cows know.

If you need to transfer across platforms on a regular basis, I would highly recommend: MacDrive 6.

We used this a lot before moving to an Avid LanShare environment.

This may or may not cure the problem, but have a check:

    Access Violations.

Is the RAM you installed fully supported by your SONY PC? Have a check on the Kingston Configurator.

Not all RAM is the same. There are minor and some major differences between them. The cheaper brands aren’t always as fast as the versions recommended by the PC manufacturer.

June 24, 2007 at 11:05 pm in reply to: Non-tape cameras subject to humidity?

We’ve being using tape (Umatic, BetaSP, BetaSX, DVCam, DigiBeta etc) for many, many years. There are a couple of measures that can be taken to prevent the humidity issues. The easiest being to seal the camera in a plastic bag with a silica-gel pack. When moving from a cold/warm to a warm/cold environment the mositure forms in/on the bag and keeps it out of the camera. It doesn’t take long.

The other option is a heated, padded jacket. Okay, this is more relevant to pro/broadcast cameras.

Yes, humidity is a problem where moisture on the head drum can cause the tape to stick and wrap around the drum. Also a problem but not as serious is mositure inside the lens assembly leading to fogging. Professional cameras tend to be sealed to prevent mositure and dust getting on to the lenses.

For tapeless cameras it’s less of an issue but the lens can still fog. Many smaller camera lenses are plastic and are less prone than glass lenses to fogging.

Either way, the plastic bag helps to protect the from sudden change in temperature/humidity.
