  • Found the same thing here. The uninstaller for QT 7 doesn’t appear to do its job properly and screws things up – and you get stuck with iTunes being installed.

I did a system restore (I’ve learnt my lesson) and got 6.5 working again.

The Avid site may appear to be out of date but as anyone who’s been on an Avid course or know any of the Avid support guys, they’ll tell you, if it isn’t on the website it isn’t supported.

True, some of the laptops are no longer available – DELL M60 for instance. But unless Avid issue an update to the list soon you’re taking a big risk financially.

    Mike,

Whenever building an Avid system from scratch, always, always check with Avid’s qualified systems to ensure you don’t make an expensive mistake.

    They always will reduce quality.

The filter is trying to create new frames of media based on shakey versions – something has to give and that is the quality.

  • I couldn’t agree more Richard.

It would be well within the capability of someone like Matrox to produce the hardware that could create the low-res streams at the same time as capturing the primary stream DV25 or above.

As you say the unique ID could be used as the identifier to tie all the versions together.

Database handling could easily be done through the cutdown version of Microsoft’s free MSDE.

Non of it is rocket science but trying to persuade Adobe to see the light would be by far the biggest challenge.

The in and out points should have been saved with the project, assuming the project wasn’t on the failed drive. You may be able to recover the in’s and out’s from the autosaved version of the project. I don’t have my machine or handbook to hand but it should cover recovery. You could also do a search within the Cow.

  • That would be a really useful feature Richard. This is something Avid already provide in a system called Media Browse Select. It automatically creates lower res proxies and adds them to the Media database. They clips are then fully searchable and can be played back on any PC (edit or not) via the Media Browse player over the network.

I doubt however that Adobe would ever add this to their product line as it requires a significant investment in additional hardware – something that Adobe don’t sell, to ensure it works and other than the professional and broadcast markets, there probably isn’t enough demand for it.

What would be good is something similar based on Adobe Bridge with the option to automatically create lo-res proxies during capture. Adobe, are you listening?

    Hi,

There is a reference in the Avid Knowledge base relating to this type of problem. One solution, although more drastic, is to delete the project settings.

However, a more likely solution is:

Set an IN point at the beginning of the timeline and an OUT point at the end of the sequence. Toggle your “Realtime Effects” button from the Green Dot to the Blue dot. Then go to your Clip menu and choose “Render IN/OUT”. Your sequence should play back fine now.

Let us know if this solves the problem.

You cannot burn to a DVD without losing quality.

The format of the DVD media is MPEG2 and you would normally be outputting in DV format. What you need to do is ensure you have set the bitrate of your DVD compression rate to the highest that will allow you to fit your material on to a single DVD and within the playback limit of most DVD players, which is usually arount 8Mbit/sec.

Have a check in the Console window and post the information here. It may provide more of an insight into the problem.
