    Danny,

    We’ve used Systimax-I GigaSpeed XL 3071E 4/23 CAT 6. IEC 332-1. You definitely shouldn’t use Cat 5 as it isn’t rated for Gigabit use.

    We haven’t had any issues at all relating to cables and curently have around 60 NewsCutters running either on LanShare or Unity.

    The worst thing you can do with a wedding video is overuse effects. This is one of the main features that separates the amateurs from the pros.

    What camera did you shoot with?

    What can give great impact is adding backgrounds to titles at the start and end of the wedding video. An good source for pre-built backgrounds is: Digital Hotcakes.

    You’ll need to add the timecode in your editing application. Obviously timecode in vision on record is out and DVD doesn’t support in vision timecode unless it is ‘burnt-in’ with the original source.

    I’d agree with that. We use Norton/Symantec and set for an update and full scan in the early hours of the morning.

    Make sure realtime scanning is switched off while you capture and edit.

    You are better off using the capture application to do this.

    We use Screen Recorder Gold and capture at 15 frames per second. This is perfect for screen demo uses as long as there isn’t too much video in view. The capture software saves direct to AVI files and can be played in Media Player etc.

    I doubt if you will find any software solution able to do that. To be able to record to DVD in realtime from firewire will need a hardware solution, in particular if you are recording to DVD as an MPEG2 standard playable DVD. To write data to a DVD for later editing with no additional compression will give you only around 20-minutes at approx 5-mins/GB per single layer DVD.

    Many of the recent consumer DVD recorders with built-in hard disks can do this however.

    I very much doubt it unless you have multiple edit systems. While ever you’re working on the timeline adding effects, edits etc, there is no ‘streamed’ output. All effects require rendering as you are changing formats for output.

    The ‘News’ Unity and LANShare products allow playback/editong while still ingesting (chunking) on separate machines but you still need to add effects in realtime and then compress the output for the web stream.

    No problem.

    For info the standard limit is 4.5 Metres but the IEEE1494b version will provide for 100 Metres.

    Now all they need to do is make a decent, lockable connector!!

    That’s not quite true. With any long cable run the effect is exactly the same. High frequencies are attenuated more than lower. This will affect the data on the cable that can lead to anything from ‘blocky’ images through to intermittent problems in scenes of high details to garbage. It all depends on how the receiving firewire transceiver can handle the incoming stream and what the video codecs following can then make of them.
    In most high data rate digital line systems, the data is ‘scrambled’ in a known and recoverable way to minimise the number of simultaneous ‘1’s and ‘0’s. Capacitance in the cable can lead to a change from a long series of ‘1’s to a few ‘0’s and back to ‘1’s, losing the ‘0’s completely as the charge on the line doesn’t balance back to zero.
    In all cases it is essential to use the highest quality cables possible.
