Hopefully Apple will have both PCMCIA and ExpressCard/34 slots in the 17″ when it comes out. They do have to make a 17″

Thanks again for the advice Bob. These guys stick to it till the end! I kept expecting to hear “well, you’ll have to send the device in” But at every dead end they perservered and after about 1 1/2 hr on the phone I’m up and running. And not one sour tone from them the whole time. Just polite relentless assistance! WOW!

I haven’t heard any comparisons of hardware vs software encoders lately. It would seem the software encoders have caught up to the hardware encoders as far as quality goes but then there’s the time factor to consider (this is diminishing rapidly with the advent or quad dual core). The only new one I’ve heard of since sonic solutions and wired media press era is the merlin line by sky micro. These look interesting but they are definately not cheap.
When you think of the consumer vcr type burners out and how effortlessly they encode from 1 to 8 hrs of video and burn to disc in real time you would think we would have more options for this type of tool. It is possible to do 2 pass VBR encoding on your hardware card and if after scrutiny, you can re-do segments in your editing app, adding compressioin markers in these tricky areas and then re-encode in compressor and stitch them back together in the timeline of your authoring app. It would be nice if these cards could read the compression markers from fcp.

for the trade magazines to do it is totally inexcusable”DV magazine is a CONSUMER magazine, not a trade magazine. Unless I’m mistaken about DV magazine. If you buy it at a news stand it is a consumer mag and if it is direct mailed through qualified lists to trades people free of charge, it is a TRADE magazine. It would be rare for a trade magazine writer to make this type of error and rarer for the editors to let it slip through, but I would expect it from a consumer magazine which, even more than a waste of money, tend to be a waste of time.

My first intro to Tosh and the site was via a News Note right here on the cow. It was written up as “Panasonic’s new informitive blog” set up to provide a tech resource for all levels of interested parties seeking info on the camera. I went to the site knowing it was Panasonic’s blog site so I don’t see the “deception” side of this contraversey. (I just briefly looked for this posting but couldn’t locate it again).
I must admit I rarely have visited blog sites due to lack of time so I’m unaware at how this site violates the spirit of true blogging.
However, if you arrive at the site by other means other than Panasonic’s own announcement/intro, I can see the confussion. The stock photo of the fellow in the header and in the “photos” section, a photo depicts Tosh in a van in the Panasonic parking lot in Japan where all you see is his feet sticking out the window and guess what? They are human feet! So I guess I understand the clamity over all this. Tosh should have had a more virtual character…. like.. “Clara” in the movie “Thomas in Love”. There would probably be a lot less complaints if the Ad Agency who concieved this idea had concidered that in the beginning.
So you ask “what do we think of Tosh?”
I vote – get rid of Tosh and give us Clara, but at any rate I don’t feel decieved or misled. If Panasonic can’t procure the rights to Clara’s character at least give Tosh a cyborg body and an AG-HVX200 head for those who stumble on the site from links other than Panasonic’s. -
I don’t know if you’ve made your move yet but for me an important issue between these 2 cameras is the 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio. Currently most of my cleints demand 4:3. The hvx200 is a fantastic future camera but duh…can we simply turn an anamorphic adapter 90′ to get a squeazed 4:3 image at full res on the 16:9 chips or would you “just” fix it in post? If you were shooting the hvx200 in dv mode and using the built in dv tape system this could be an issue.

I’m left scratching my head on this one. A great camera just got greater and Panasonic knows their market much better than I but I would have expected 16:9 chips at this stage. All the post-dececcessors: XL2 and HDV assortments have adopted many of the DVX100’s feature set (24fps) and added 16:9 chips. With the HVX200 on the doorstep (don’t forget it has mini dv tape built in), this upgrade seems unsubstancial at this time. Love the new color though.

I’ve considered this same delema. The 30″‘s are sure amazing. After watching some halloween style spooky movies being promoted down at the video store I was struck by a terrible horrific thought, what if…… you were using your favorite mic for v/o work and the boomstand got knocked over and it struck your monitor and cracked the lcd! …. or the cleaning lady backed into it with her mop handle and it cracked the lcd!!!
The morrow of the nightmere is – only one would be disabled if you’d bought the 2- 23″ers and the repair cost would be 1/2.
I went for the 2 – 23″ers but I still have nightmeres but only when I’m not using them.
