Activity Forums Panasonic Cameras HVX200 as HDV

I’m getting sick of reading that the HVX records in HDV. This from Kimberly Reed in the December2005 DV magazine:
“The HVX200, which records DV onto miniDV tape or HDV onto P2 or tape,………”
They got it wrong twice. I’ve read elswhere that it’s an HDV camera too. I understand how the reviewers are
comparing it to HDV cameras, based on pricepoint, but the format distinction is left out way too often. Jan, are you beating them up on this?
Doesn’t DV Mag and Kimberly deserve a wrist slapping from Panasonic? You know a “Thanks for mentioning our soon-to-
be-released HVX200 in your December issue. I thought it would be helpful to mention that although the headline of the
article is IBC 2005 Through an HDV Lens, and she said it records HDV onto P2 or tape, neither is true you twits!” Cordially,
    Jan Critteneden, Panasonic

If every news source on the net had correct information it wouldn’t be the net would it?

B&H winter 2005/06 Sourcebook makes the same mistake. How can they all get it wrong?

Very true Noah, in this case though, it’s not just on the net, it’s in black and white on real paper in DV Magazine.

Not to excuse it, but it almost makes more sense that a catalog would do it. The hot buzzword is HDV, and the HVX200
*will* be competing mainly against HDV products, so to lump them all together is somewhat understandable. But
for the trade magazines to do it is totally inexcusable (IMHO).

Email them and bitch about it. Most magazines list editorial contact information in the magazine or on their website. Not contacting them essentially lets them get away with providing false information.

Do it man… DO IT!!! 🙂

DV magazine is a CONSUMER magazine, not a trade magazine. Unless I’m mistaken about DV magazine. If you buy it at a news stand it is a consumer mag and if it is direct mailed through qualified lists to trades people free of charge, it is a TRADE magazine. It would be rare for a trade magazine writer to make this type of error and rarer for the editors to let it slip through, but I would expect it from a consumer magazine which, even more than a waste of money, tend to be a waste of time.

I think it’s safe to say that DV straddles the line. I *do* get it free from being on a qualified list (and a tradesperson too!).
And the articles by Chris and Trish Meyers and others about esoteric things like Shake 4 and the intricicies of the Motion interface
certainly aren’t for consumers. A strictly consumer mag wouldn’t be doing
their cover story (as they are this month) on designing graphics for HD (yes, *real HD). You might think DV’s a waste of time, but if
you really want to waste your time, read their DV Event magazine, geared towards the wedding crowd, now *that’s* painful!
