Yes, it sure sounds like film fogging or grossly over exposed film from opening the iris to far. If you have a hi res digital camera with a macro lens you could tape the film strip to a light table (or even a window) so the gaffers tape masks off everything but the film strip, then take some photos of it making sure you only see the film strip and gaffers tape in the viewfinder and not any of the bright light table. Even a 1-1 ratio full macro lens will only give you an image as big as the 16mm frame itself so it will be a small area of the digital camera frame but if the camera captures 6MB files or so you could easily blow them up on your time line. Take some over exposed, properly exposed and under exposed (so bracket at 1/3 stop increments for variety) and you should get different intensities of the frames you photograph. These can be imported to your NLE and saved as overlay masks. You will likely need to play with the density of any images you lay them on in the time line if you want the effect over your images as with the original film, the image gets burnt out also when the fogging occurs and it exists only faintly on the film after overexposure (with positive stock).

I want the model number of the panasonic camera you used for playback. If it played back NTSC DV through firewire and you recorded that stream to a PAL DV format and got a good looking PAL DV cassette from it I’m going to buy 100 of each camera to start with and mount them in a box with the cassette doors facing out to the front of the box and seal them in there connected with firewire. I will then sell these “boxes” as real time NTSC – PAL converters for $10,000.00 each.
There is no way this should work. Try to play these “PAL” copies you made this way in the panasonic camera. If they are PAL they will not play but if they are still NTSC they will play. I think the Sony PD-170 PAL camera must have somehow recorded it to NTSC. Cameras can’t convert but possibly some can play and record both formats (like the Sony DSR-11 deck). I think your copies you made this way are still NTSC.
If this is what has happened you can take your digital copies and convert with Nattress format converter for good results however this is a very slow process so you want to be very selective in how much you are going to convert.

Mine doesn’t work and I would like to get it functional someday but I fear it may not happen. I also would like to try the following-
One of the neatest things I saw done with a dead one was the guy took the tube out and installed an Apple 17″ lcd monitor inside the plastic bubble that encases the tube. It was one of the 1st apple lcd’s with the thick opal rim around the outside. It fit nicely inside and it looked fantastic! The computer was under the desk and the keyboard was in front. Now-a-days you could locate a mac mini inside the cabinet and use a wireless keyboard. They look totally amazing with a rich color picture from an lcd screen inside.

In my old studio I used to have my rates framed on the wall where clients would see it for sure. I think I need to find it and put it up here also. It might be a good idea to email your clients your “New Rate Sheet” for spring 2008.
It is so easy to forget about ourselves. We read in the news paper how grain is DOUBLING in price globally and when we go to market we understand why a loaf of bread is $5.00, Not to mention gas is $1.17 per liter (we’ve heard on the news it is expected to reach $1.50 this year… so we just pay at the pump. We also need to adjust for cost of living escalation.
How about the sign in the local automotive shop that reads:
SHOP RATE: = $50.00 PER HR.
If you watch: $60.00 PER HR.

I wish I could remember the name of the book I read when I took out my 1st yellow page ad. I found it at the local library and it was made to look like a miniature phone book (a little bigger than a DVD library case and 3-4 times as thick with a yellow cover. The author had worked for Dominion Directories for about 15 years and grew to despise them. He revealed every dirty trick in the book (literally). It should have been mandatory reading for all unscrupulous sales people but it offers a valuable insight for you and me.
I recently went to a cell only system but I now regret it because long distance incoming is expensive on the cell and you need a “more free time” plan. I think you have much better cell rates in the US than here in Canada.
The system I had always used prior was: yellow pages, business cards and everything went to the land line. After 4 rings, calls forwarded to the cell and then went to voice mail 3 rings after that. Nobody ever got my cell number from me but could easily get me by cell when I was out. Cell companies always give you the first month or 3 months free so you go wild – text-ing, handing out your number etc. while the novelty is hot, then the free period ends and you start getting those 15 page bills.
