You don’t need to go to miniDV to edit DVD footage in FCP.

You can put the DVD into the Mac computer and simply pull the digital info off of the disc (called DVD “ripping”) and convert it to a Quicktime file that can be edited in FCP.

DVD footage in MUCH more severely compressed than DV, but. if it was recorded and compressed well, it should look very nice.

You do want to avoid as many DV>DVD>DV>DVD conversions as you can.

Get the tapes. DVD is a final delivery format. You take a 20 GB project and encode it to a 4.7 GB file to squeeze it on to the dvd disc. This is intelligently done but the process is lossy, meaning data is lost in the process. Upon play back dvd decoders intelligently fill in the lost data with good enough accuracy to fool our eyes but if you plan to rework this video you will get some artifacts. DV isn’t the greatest but at least it is frame by frame resolution. You should always use original footage to edit or digital copies of original footage which it sounds like the mini dv tapes are.

We managed to get the original MiniDvs and made copies.

These were NTSC MiniDVs and we copied them using two cameras. To reproduce we used a small consumer NTSC Panasonic cam connected via firewire to a Sony PD170 PAL. It seemed to have worked fine. Do you think this is an ‘orthodox enough’ way to make the NTSC to PAL conversion?

I want the model number of the panasonic camera you used for playback. If it played back NTSC DV through firewire and you recorded that stream to a PAL DV format and got a good looking PAL DV cassette from it I’m going to buy 100 of each camera to start with and mount them in a box with the cassette doors facing out to the front of the box and seal them in there connected with firewire. I will then sell these “boxes” as real time NTSC – PAL converters for $10,000.00 each.

There is no way this should work. Try to play these “PAL” copies you made this way in the panasonic camera. If they are PAL they will not play but if they are still NTSC they will play. I think the Sony PD-170 PAL camera must have somehow recorded it to NTSC. Cameras can’t convert but possibly some can play and record both formats (like the Sony DSR-11 deck). I think your copies you made this way are still NTSC.

If this is what has happened you can take your digital copies and convert with Nattress format converter for good results however this is a very slow process so you want to be very selective in how much you are going to convert.

Yes indeed ! I tested it and as you say the MiniDVs are in NTSC format. Now we are making a small demo of the doc and the material is in the hands of an editor. I suggested to him to convert formats using Nattress.
