SECAM color bars?
Posted by Rich Sims on March 26, 2008 at 7:50 pmHello,
I just finished and project and needed to convert it to PAL and SECAM from NTSC. I used the Nattress filter set and it worked great. Along the way finding out that once you enter into the digital world PAL and SECAM are the same.but one question remains.
In FCP I can generate color bars for PAL and NTSC but what do I do about the missing SECAM standard. Do I just use the PAL bars following the thinking that since they are used interchangeably in the digital world that this will work?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

March 26, 2008 at 8:42 pmTell me about it.
I seems to be a lone ranger in a Secam desert. Maybe I can catch a cheap flight to France. This one seems to keep stumping everyone.
Take care,

Yeah, I know. It’s an inside joke which does NOT translate well via forum.

March 26, 2008 at 9:26 pmThose PAL bars are really EBU bars. They are used throughout Europe…both PAL and SECAM.

March 26, 2008 at 11:25 pmYes, John Pale is right.
Pal color bars do not exist. Pal is the wrong word for EBU (European Broadcast Union).
This means, the color of any digital signal is digital and not Pal or Secam. A Pal signal is a composite signal (extracted from a digital or component analog video signal) used mainly in western Europe and Secam is a composite signal used mainly in France, Russia and eastern Europe.I live in France, and nobody here asks for a Secam color bar.
Everyone from the consumer “amateur” video film maker up to the best post houses use a digital signal. This digital signal is then converted to Pal if necessary.
Only broadcasters use Secam signals (Only for broacasting)By the way: Do you why Pal and Secam composite signals both exist?
Because at the beginning of 60’s, President o France General De Gaulle wanted a french-german cooperation on color television but based on french rules(French developped Secam and german developped Pal at the same time). Germans refused.
So, General de Gaulle offered the Secam system to the USSR and its european satellites.

NTSC-M

NTSC 4.43/3:58
Looks like we’ll do it all over again with HD.

March 27, 2008 at 1:58 amHi Rich,
SECAM is a format only for Broadcasting, not for production.
In all the SECAM countries, people film and edit in PAL and only when the signal is aired is converted in SECAM. The TV sets then convert it in PAL again to be watched.Mac OX 10.5.2-FC 6.02-QT 7.4.1
