I have a 2Ghz core2duo T7200 in my laptop with 2 GB of ram and a mobile radeon x1600. I could not ask for better AE performance in a laptop. While not a screamer, I can run AE, PPro, and IE all at the same time with acceptable results.
I just wish they would release quad core laptop processors (like the q6600).

You will have to use one of the following solutions:

1. Capture through your video card (most of the newer cards have an s-video input that you can use to capture through)

2. Use a firewire converter box that takes the analog VHS signal and converts it to Firewire (DV) which would then hook into a firewire port in the PC

3. There are some analog to USB converter boxes to get the signal digitized and then transferred over USB.

4. Get a dedicated capture/playback card with breakout box like a Matrox RT.x2 or similar.

Solutions run from about $100 to $2000.

Another issue is getting audio in and synched up with the video. Many people are buying inexpensive mini-DV cameras that allow for analog to DV input and then hooking the camera up to the computer through firewire. This way the camera acts as the digitizer to then send the info to the PC.

Simply put, you could EQ out the upper frequencies, at the expense though of fidelity and quality.

Download Boris continuum complete (the demo will work for 15 days with no watermarking).

It has a fabulous old film simulator that can add shake, hairs, dirt, contrast issues, bad tracking, etc.

It is, in a word, amazing. Long render time, but worth it!

Plus, the chroma keyer (combined with simple choker) are some of the best “out of the box” keying solutions Ive ever seen.

Looks real good. You will love the quad core 6600. screaming fast.

As for video cards, go with a Quadro. (512) they are pricey but worth it in terms of render time.

Also, you might want to look into a BluRay burner.

There has been some limited success by putting the hard drive in a very cold refrigerator (not freezer) overnight.

Then hook it up and grab your data. A good tech-geek friend of mine says that this can help the bearings “gel” and work for another good run.

Does this happen if you shut down the premiere project, or only when you do a system reboot?

I would suspect that it has to do with either:
1. Media Cache files are being corrupted or changed by windows (these are usually found on the C: drive in the adobe folder)
2. The fact that you are using an external drive can be causing some confusion for the software. But this usually manifests when PPro will ask you where a file is. Strange.

Go under Prefs and look at all options for your previews, scratch, etc. and make sure it is pointing correctly.

I would export it out as either a uncompressed movie or as a DV-AVI first, then take that file and send it to my DVD encoder.

I would not encode it directly off the premiere timeline (as in Adobe media encoder).

It looks like there are only 2 other mentions of this error on the internet (at Adobe’s forum) and no one has any answers there.

I couldnt even find anything in any Windows forums. I would send it directly to Adobe tech support.
