HELP my hard drive has died with my video clips – SAVE ME!

    dusky wilkinson – 09:08am Feb 25, 2008 Pacific

I have been editing for 4 months a a wedding video using a Lacie 500 gig external hard drive wich started making strange churning noises last night.

It wont read most of my AVI files i have on there associated with my project…..although i have managed to copy some accross to annother hard drive in a recovery mission!!!!!

My project however is safe as its on the local drive of my laptop….hence all the media is now off line………

    what do i do?

    please help

There has been some limited success by putting the hard drive in a very cold refrigerator (not freezer) overnight.

Then hook it up and grab your data. A good tech-geek friend of mine says that this can help the bearings “gel” and work for another good run.

    hope this helps!

As long as you saved the project on a different drive, or had automatic back up saves on a different drive, you can just batch capture everything in the bin again – assuming you named your tapes correctly during the original capture. Once everything is captured again, your edit will be right back to the way it was.

For the media that you have been able to copy over, just right click on an item in the bin, choose replace file with / find file / reconnect media (whatever it is in this program), point to the new location, and all files in the same directory will automatically be found as long as your file and folder structure is the same as before.

aww, I remember an argument I had last year about Lacie, and WD disasters. Seagate is probably a better choice, take my word for it, I have not seen one crash in 10 years.

The freezer might work, although you’ll probably only get a few more minutes of spin time. You could also crack it open and try hooking the drive directly inside your computer, but a clicking noise is bad news…

Recapturing is probably about it. Thank your lucky Star you had time to save your project.

I agree…for now, find another storage solution, and recapture media. Such a good thing you had that project saved on your internal drive! Freezer MIGHT work, but as they said, it isn’t a long-term solution.

    Looking into the future….

Might be a good idea to invest in the largest and cheapest firewire HDD you can afford, and just make it a habit to back up all files immediately after you capture to a cheap external hdd, then set it on a shelf for just such eventuality….the 1TB MyBooks are very cheap at Costco!

OR look into RAID 5 either external drives (expensive) or if your motherboard already has that capability….might be cheaper to buy several internal drives and set up your own.

Also good to save projects once a week/month to a DVD or CD for archival purposes in case that internal drive fails.

    Sorry man, best of luck!

    Update………….

Having only just read your messages i wonder if i should have bought a new Lacie!!!!!DOH anyway…………….

I have been back to the shop where i purchased the Lacie 500 GB hard drive.

They sold me a new 500 GB hard drive ancopied over MOST of my AVI files associated from my project. (just so i dont have to batch capture all my video clips again)!

anynow i have now just tried booting up premiere again with my new hard drive plugged in and i keep getting an error message that shuts down the programme – Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

for the record it has also displayed the message with the old hard drive….so i dont think its the new hard drive causing the issue

the error message is as follows:

Adobe Premier Pro has encounterd an error.

    [dev\starsky\libaries\ASL\Foundation\Src\PathUtlis.cpp-213]7

i dont know how to post pics on here but somthing that seems odd is that this error message doesnt look like a genuine windows one as the red circle with a white cross going through it looks diffrent.

    thanks in advance

a very fustrated and now skint Paul

I believe this has to do with the paths that PP is looking for your scratch discs, but I’m mainly an FCP user lately, so I’m not up on all of the error mssgs.

Check your prefs, and see where PP is looking for your footage. I would disconnect the drive, reset everything in prefs to your main drive, open the project offline, then turn on the drives and reconnect the media to the external, then set your scratch discs to the external drive folders.

Again, I’m not up on the latest and greatest versions of Premiere, so anyone with more expertise in this area know?

We have this same problem at our work, but our project file won’t open. When I try to import it into a new cs4 project, it tells me Dynamic Link Error or something.

Is all lost for me? I lost all the media files but at the last second was able to save the project file on my local drive.

    What can I do.
