My guess is that the addition of the watermark is adding to the rendering time. Is the watermark transparent on both? Transparency would add encoding time – just as color correction does.

Tilt the clip and zoom in a bit.

Bad memory in your USB stick?

  • Three things determine file size – the frame size, frame rate, and bit-rate. (There are other factors but those are the big-three) Reduce your frame size to mpeg4 setting, reduce your frame rate by one half to 15fps, reduce your bit-rate to 250. See what you come up with in terms of file size. There are enough varibles to toy with that it’s best to encode 30 seconds exactly with any setting and use that as a bench-mark for file size and quality.

My nifty turntable worked great! I hung the rings upside down, dangling on a stiff wire (mandolin string) – looks great on flipped video with highlight sparkles inside a light-tent. Client was pleased with rings filling only a quarter of the screen and his logo and ring description taking up the rest of the space…the ring via my rig seemed to be floating in space. Yeah, I lucked out..

Lesson learned…The challenge to filming jewelry is about lighting as much as it is about optics – read: macro lenses.

For what it’s worth…turning up the sharpness in a video camera ADDS noise, especially in low light situations.

[Ty Ford] “Have you asked a jewelry store what they use ?”

The ‘viewing area’ for diamonds has a focused track light shooting straight down – when the salesman turns the diamond in that light – it sparkles like magic. Out of that beam – it kind of dies…

I did some test shots using a tent and an led beam funneled through a little white funnel I taped to the lite – works great.

Now my problem is getting in close enough to fill the frame. Best I can do with my Canon lens is about 1/4 of full-frame.

    OK – here’s a cheap solution of a florescent interview kit. B&H Impact IMDLSF3K – $219.

3 stands, one with a boom arm – 30 watt daylight florescent lamps (150 watt incandescent equivalent)93csi

I bought it for shooting small products – but tried it today as an interview kit – worked great, no heat!

For the price, I was surprised at how well it was constructed and how even the light.

Don’t laugh – that leaves $1300 in your budget.

[Ty Ford] “Apparently the concern was that particles in the tubes would fall down to the contacts and cause the tube to malfunction. Does anyone know anything about this?”

Not to worry. The contact end of a ‘U’ tube is where the heat is – it should be at the bottom.
