    Hi,

    I just bought a decent video-editing computer.
    It’s a Dual xeon 5130 with 2GB of ram and a relatively fast SATA drive (not RAID).

    Now, my issue is this… my old P4 2.8Ghz with 1gb of ram renders a .wmv faster than this new beast, and I don’t feel too happy about it.

    Details of videos,

    Original MPEG-1 Ntsc 320x240px.
    Output .wmv v9 PAL 320×240
    There’s a .png watermark on top of the video in it’s own layer on top of the video.

    My P4 2.8 renders a 30 minute clip in about 45-55 minutes.
    It takes over an hour for my Xeon machine to do this on identical video, any ideas why?

    I’ve enabled hyperthreading (4). My CPU usage is around 40% on the XEON, where as my P4 is around 99% while rendering. I’m using vegas 7.0 trial (..and not going to buy the final product if this doesn’t start to work a bit faster..)

    I’m not doing ANY editing, so basically I just add a .png watermark and change the format from MPEG-1 to .wmv v9.

    In both cases are you rendering to and from the same drive? If you’re rendering from one drive to another on the old machine, this could make the difference because the bottleneck may be the drives.

    My guess is that the addition of the watermark is adding to the rendering time. Is the watermark transparent on both? Transparency would add encoding time – just as color correction does.

    It seems to me that the WMV renderer doesn’t use multiple threads when rendering your video, therefore not taking advantage of the fact that you have two CPUs. The 40% CPU usage points in that direction anyway.

    Open the CPU measure and check what the CPU usage of both the CPUs are, I am willing to bet that one of them is not as active as the other.
