You must be, as the compressor/limiter inside FCP will do what you need. I use it all the time for quick/simple jobs. I generally send to Logic for anything I want to be absolutely perfect. To get the most out of it, you should probably change the settings of the compressor to best suit each speakers style, but it can be done, and relatively quickly if you understand what the threshold and ratio settings do and can read the waveform.

A standard audio CD is 44.1k/16 bit. If you have just ripped the audio from the CD using something like Itunes it will be an AIFF 44.1k.
Either re-rip your CD as a 48K file using something like Cubase or Logic or convert your file to 48k before dropping it into your project. To convert it, bring the audio file into Soundtrack Pro, and choose process>resample>48000. Then save the file making sure you select sample rate 48000.

I’m not choosing Quicktime conversion, I’m just choosing >Export > Quicktime Movie, but changing the “current settings” pulldown menu to ProRes, as I had read somewhere earlier on this forum that ideally it would be best to export as ProRes rather than HDV, and, as I was editing in a HDV native sequence I thought that was the best way to go.
I am using some text so basically it sounds like my best bet at the moment would be to copy/paste the edit into a ProRes 1440×1080 sequence. Then export that using current settings.

And one extra question.
I have been exporting ProRes as 1920 x 1080, but should I be exporting as 1440 x 1080 (as thats what the HDV footage was) and letting compressor deal with the frame size change when encoding for SD DVD?Thanks,

Then just use Itunes. Drag your mp3’s into Itunes, select preferences > Import Settings. In the drop down menu choose AIFF encoder. Then select your music in the itunes library, right click and choose “Convert to AIFF”.

I’ve found it can generally be “good enough” for touching up reasonably well recorded dialogue, but for more intensive corrective measures, or any music content you will get noticeably better results by taking it into Logic or ProTools.

It sounds like you have a sample rate issue. Video codecs generally use 48k as the sample rate. If you have recorded your audio as 44.1k and then put it into a FCP sequence it will go out of sync. Or… if you recorded your audio as 48k but bought it into another audio editing program (such as Logic Pro) with the Project settings set to 44.1k, once again it will go out of sync.
Go back into whatever you used to create and/or mixdown your audio and check that all of the files you are using are 48k, check that the project settings are 48k. When you export it from Protools or whatever make sure you are exporting it as a 16 bit 48k file?
Yes it’s a tough learning curve but if you’re not interested in learning then I’d get out of the Video editing business now, because you will always strike things that are frustrating. No matter which program you use. These apps are called ProApps for a reason. If you want a simple, go use Imovie.

Unfortunately it could be your Video Card. My X1900 did something very similar a year or two ago. I ended up downloading a utility called SMCFanControl to manually boost the internal fans and cool the card down. This worked for a little while, but eventually I just had to replace the card.
Ended up replacing it with a 3870.
If you do a search for MacPro/Warcraft you will see this card has a known overheating issue with some games, so it only stands to reason that it could also overheat when being taxed in some Video environs.

It’s impossible to give a “one size fits all” EQ advise. You need to know what the frequency range of your unwanted noise is, and the frequency range of your wanted noise. Then EQ out anything that is in the unwanted noise range, while generally keeping the wanted noise.
Of course, Apple has made this a lot easier for people that don’t have “trained ears” and that is using the Remove Noise functions, and Spectrum Analyser functions in Soundtrack Pro. It’s pretty easy, even for the audio novice.
