With firewire there is no out sync, because the signal is together. How do you monitor audio/video? Do you go over Bnc through what? Deck, breakoutbox or computer?

You have to squeeze it in the 4:3. Make up a new sequence 16:9. Import the squeezed 4:3 sequence. Now you have a 16:9

You have to render in DV50 codec, then make up a new DV sequence, copy the whole and render again. The type looks always fuzzy in DV. It’s the 4:1:2 signal. In DV50 you have 4:2:2. This makes the difference.

G3 ? avery slow system. Do you run FCP 4.5? I think you’re still on 3.0 using 9.2 System. Perhaps the codec for the deck is not there. I need more information about your mac.

Your system is too slow, it’s just for DV codec. DVCPro is around 3,6 Mb/s, Dv is 3.0 Mb/s. So you have to render. Set your files and your sequence to DV. With no layer your system should handle the files without rendering. Otherwise you need a raid. But on a minimac I don’t know whether you can handle a raid.
