    Hi,

I’m using the SPX800. It’s a wonderful camera. The P2 workflow is fantastic in terms of no digitising process. It’s much quicker. I have the fastest Laptop with it, running the newest versions of FCP5. We ude the camera for high quality imagefilms and commercials. Even a 35 mm blowup turns out very good. Almost like shot on super16mm. You have to shoot on 25p and cinegamma, together with black stretch. The file import goes over USB from camera to lap

    Hi folks,

    the workflow is as follows:

You can import the P2 data definitely in FCP5, this is what I do every day. You hook the camera via USB into a mac with Tiger and FCP5. Make shure you put the P2 cards into protect mode, otherwise they won’t show up as HD on the desktop. Once the P2 cards show up you have two possibilities. Either you copy the contents folder onto HD, or you open up FCP and choose import P2. Each P2 card shows up, you choose the first, click on import all files and that`s it. Make shure you repeat the process for each P2 card. You need the camera, the PCMI slot in teh mac doesn`t recognize the P2 card. This is difgferent to Windows.
    I hope this will help

Make a clean install of everything 1. Os10.4.2, 2.FCP 5, 3. upgrade FCP5, 4. install io software (all of it) 5.repair HD permissions.
    It should work.
All of it on a clean HD.

How did you do your installation of 10.4 and FCP.
Tiger needs a total clean install. That means you have to wipe one HD completely install 10.4, update 10.4, install FCP5, update FCP5, install Aja software.
The newest 10.4.2 is very reliable. When you have installed everything you have to repair HD permissions.

  • Start your aja box first. start computer, switch off aja for 10 sec. switch it on. If the out is still not working you have a hardware problem (contact Aja)
Before all that you have to check your A/V settings in FCP.

Jeff is one hundred percent right. Two complete systems on two partitions. You have to restart the computer to work either on 4.5 or 5.
Don’t mix the two, and don’t mix project files, you end up in a mess, because onco you’ve transferred a 4.5 project into a 5.0 project you have to carry on in 5.0.
This is the only way I know of that the two systems work reliable.

Yes you can. You have to have two systems on two hard discs. I recommend OsX 3.8 for FCP 4.5 and the newest Tiger version with 5. Keep your project seperated from each other. If you have a project in FCP4.5 keep it there, if you started on 5 treat it the same way. You start the computer with one of the systems depending on what FCP you work.

P.S. FCP 5 needs a clean install with Tiger

I’m workinng with P2 and mac FCP5.0 and I have to say, everything is fine. I’ll go via USB into a laptop g4, firewire 800 La cie for a double back up. I use the camera (SPX 800) for transfer (it’s not worth it buying a damn expensive card reader or an attached transfer disc) Costs more than a whole G4 Powerbook.

I work with a SPX 800 and use a laptop which is nearly the same prize as the Panasonic thing. I wouldn’t buy it. The transfer speed is nearly the same than with USB. Go for a mac laptop instead.

    Hi Tom,

perhaps you have a good recommendation. I remember my first steps and found Lisas book very helpful.
