  • how did you get the FW Signal in FCP?
If you go over FW400 connection for example in an AJA Breakout box, you need the magic number 5 frames delay before some time it was 7 frames including a blackburst signal for sync. It sounds to me, that the breakout box feeding the signal was not sync and the FCP has had the wrong settings. When I started with FCP with no sync (4 years ago) I’ve had the same problems. If you have no blackburst generator, you can simply go with an BNC output of a videomachine in the sync of the breakoutbox. This works as well.

Three years perfect workflow with p2 on different cameras in combination with FCP, not one file lost, file copies with no problems even in international changes.
    I’ll recommend p2.
The only thing is, that sony has a 1/2 inch chip in the small HDV Panasonics 200 is a 1/3 inch chip. So in this example the sony gives a better image.
On the full HD cameras as the 3100 or 2100 Panasonic is far better (100 Mb/s) and it’s a 1080i Codec which is very common.
Sony always wants to do something on their own, own codecs, own special things, not really compatible. This is history, because Digibeta and Beta SP are dead.

Three years professional use with P2 on different Panasonic cameras. Not one single file lost, nor any problems with copying files or corrupt files. The system works perfect.
The main topic is to perform a perfect workflow. If people run this system with professional care it works perfect.

    For your P2 workflow:
First I transfer the P2 card on a HD. Then I unpack the data with FCP on another HD. Then you realize immediately when one card or a clip doesn’t work and you have double backup for the P2 files

You need to recapture. Just transfer all of the tape with capture now. Be aware that you have to check system configuration in FCP. You have to switch off the lines saying stop capturing with TC breaks. Don’t capture more than 30 Minutes a a Time.

Colour is designed to work uncompressed on a high level (HD or ProRes). It doesn’t like breakoutboxes with FW connections. That’s the problem with IO. To work properly you have to use a card (Kona3 for example. It works also together with IO)

  • Try it with the 8 GB Ram. If the ram doesn’t meet the specs you either can’t put it in the ram bank (it doesn’t fit) or your computer doesn’t boot. If the Ram is okay it works better with 8 GB.

February 2, 2008 at 2:27 pm in reply to: 10,5 or still stick with 10.4

    still working with 10.4.
But I’ve done a clean install on another HD with 10.5. and all the applications I need. The third party products have still some problems. So I’m waiting till the last problems disappeared. I think I’m switching in March / April this year.

2.5 GB Ram is a little weak.
I would go for 4-6 GB.
I assume you’ve done a clean System install.
