    hi Nathan,

even TB2 gives you enough speed for 4k editing.
So mixing the devices with a TB3 computer is no problem,

    cheers

    Yes,

I would go for a new 8 bay drive system Raid6 with 10TB drives.

    Hi Jim,

we still run a SAS Sonnet Raid. But we will replace it this year. Up to now it is working.
It is a solid piece of equipment.
    Now to your question.
I think the maximum drive size you can use is 4TB.
Which enclosure do you have ?
There is a drive compatibility list. You have to use drives out of this list. All drives must be the same model. Then you can swop your old ones against the new ones.
The question is: Does it makes sense to invest in this old architecture?

    cheers

    Hi folks,

    1. Keep the set up and save the money until you have more to spent on a new mac (ImacPro) for more CPU Power. Your mac is on high sierra, so okay.
    2. Instead of more CPU Power you can invest money in a new Raid, which will be also okay with a new mac in the future.
    I wouldn’t go for a eGPU.
A new computer will give you enough power to operate without eGPU.
I would not invest in an old system.

    cheers

    Hi Jay,

no problems with bigger drives from the comptibility list.
All drives must be the same.
You can use the 3TB drives for back-up as single drives. That is what we do.
I would go for a Raid 6 arrangement. So you get more safety.
Buy 10 drives, just in case you get a failure.

    cheers

May 14, 2019 at 12:36 pm in reply to: Raid transfer speed inquiry

    Hi Anhtu,

you can test write, read speed with Aja speed test.
Surprisingly you work with Raid 0, which is a bit harakiri.
If one disk fails you end up with a total data loss.
For video editing the read speed is always higher than the write speed.
If your SAS system is nearly full the speed goes down on a significant level.
The PCIx Slot is not your bottleneck. Even with x8 you should get more data speed out of your SAS system.
It should be around 700 MB per second.

    This should answer your question.

    cheers
