June 9, 2020 at 11:35 am in reply to: colour difference between computers

    Hi folks,

    first question:
Do you have a proper monitoring?
If you don’t have at least a class 2 monitor with a breakout card you just do not know what you are doing. A computer monitor, except an expensive calibrated eizo monitor, will not show you an exact picture.
    second question:
Which color space are you working in?

    cheers

June 9, 2020 at 11:27 am in reply to: Archiving video from PC to VHS using Firewire.

    Hi folks,

yes you can. A VHS recorder has no FW400 in-output. So you need a converter from FW400 input onto an anloge composite output into the VHS recorder. Best thing is to buy used euipment via ebay.
I still have all the equipment here, but this is Germany. The box I have is a data video yuv to DV DAC-2 converter. I think that blackmagic and Aja have similar boxes.

    cheers

May 19, 2020 at 9:09 am in reply to: Major Catalina Catastrophe

    Hi Jim,

I have read it but didn’t know what to say,
because whats happened to you is horrible.
I wouldn`t even want to think about it.
I just thought: What lucky I was never touched Catalina and what a mess
for people who are stuck with it. Especially when you bought a new macPro
for a couple of thousands of dollars.
I hope you can cope with it

    cheers

May 18, 2020 at 10:10 am in reply to: Best FPS Strategy in Final Cut?

    Hi James,

FPS has no influence on a cinematografic look. The things important are:
A proper lighting, using large camera sensors (super 35, micro4’3, fullframe 35, middleformat), using fixed lenses.
In the postproduction: Intensive Colour correction.
    Don’t mix framerates. And don’t mix 24, 25, 50 fps with 30 or 60 fps. You don’t want to shoot in 24fps.
If your movie is really going on the big screen you are able to do a proper Hardware frameconversion.

    cheers

    Hi folks,

why do you want to upgrade to catalina?
    Is there any benefit?
For my work i can see none, except of running into troubles with a lot of 32bit applications i use.
So stick to Mojave and wait till the next os comes out.
We still run a mac Pro with snow leapard sucessfully.

    cheers

  • Hi Patrick,

it seems to be the TB connection Nr.4 in the ImacPro.
When I use another TB connection the sonnet works.
I then tried to use the TB3 dual display adapter in Nr.4 and it wont work.
Any ideas how to get the TB connection Nr.4 to work?

    thanks,

    Rainer

  • Hi Patrick,

it seems that one of my thunderbolt connections in the Imac Pro is dead.
The echo works when I used another TB connector.
I then put on the same connection the TB3 dual display adapter.
The displays won’t work. I used the next TB connection and it worked.
Any ideas to get the TB Connector to work?

    cheers

February 26, 2020 at 10:53 am in reply to: Q about Enhance Tech (also called ProAvio) drive tower

    Hi Jim,

I have had fails with raid 5 (several ones)
and even one fail with Raid6.
It depends on the working hours of the Raid.
You equipe all drives at a time, and after a period of around 5 years or 50.000 working hours some of the harddiscs are tired (we are talking of 24-7 drives only). So with a raid of 24 drives you have good chances that two drives go bad at the same time.
So that is what we do:
If the Raid system is over 5 years old we change it from a green label as we say, to a yellow label.
Yellow means we use the Raid for non-critical data storage.
After 6 years we replace all drives and use the old drives for extra storage.
After 10 years we replace the raid completely.
The 16-24 bay raids all run with raid6 plus spare.
With this system we have reduced the fails to Zero.

    cheers

    Rainer
